This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 6 - 13 working days The Swan Book is set in the future, with Aboriginals still living under the Intervention in the north, in an environment fundamentally altered by climate change. It follows the life of a mute teenager called Oblivia, the victim of gang-rape by petrol-sniffing youths, from the displaced community where she lives in a hulk, in a swamp filled with rusting boats, and thousands of black swans driven from other parts of the country, to her marriage to Warren Finch, the first Aboriginal president of Australia, and her elevation to the position of First Lady, confined to a tower in a flooded and lawless southern city. The Swan Book has all the qualities which made Wright's previous novel, Carpentaria, a prize-winning bestseller. It offers an intimate awareness of the realities facing Aboriginal people; the wild energy and humour in her writing finds hope in the bleakest situations; and the remarkable combination of storytelling elements, drawn from myth and legend and fairy tale, has Oblivia Ethylene in the company of amazing characters like Aunty Bella Donna of the Champions, the Harbour Master, Big Red and the Mechanic, a talking monkey called Rigoletto, three genies with doctorates, and throughout, the guiding presence of swans. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Ruud Pujasumarta has seen some gang-perpetrated horror crimes in his time, but the slum murder of a middle-aged woman he is called to is both horrifying and baffling. Mari Agnes Liem has not only been choked to death while tied to her bed, but the murderer has amputated her left hand and left a mah jong tile in her throat. And he has taken the hand with him. Ruud's personal life is a disaster - the whole world seems to know that his wife has left him for another man, perhaps because his (ex) mother-in-law keeps on turning up at his office with food for him. The only bright spot on Ruud's horizon is the imminent arrival of Imke Sneijder from Amsterdam, whom he hasn't seen for fifteen years, when they were both twelve-year-old neighbours before her family moved back to Holland. As Ruud and his department investigate the crime and the others that follow, he begins to realise that the current murderous spree may be linked to events which occured fifteen years ago, at about the time Imke left Indonesia... This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Lifeboats occupy a particular place in people's hearts, as unpaid volunteers regularly take to their boats--often in extremely adverse conditions--to rescue others from the sea. The stories that go with lifeboats and their crews are those of courage, sacrifice, community, and the coastline. No matter if one is on holiday by the coast, or living inland, we are always aware of the work these brave crews do, and also aware of the tremendous affection the RNLI has throughout the whole of the British Isles. An island race appreciates those who risk their lives continually to help those endangered at sea. "May-Day May-Day " showcases the work, over many years, that the RNLI crews have undertaken, using the technology and training of their time to go out into dangerous waters to rescue people. It contains a great deal of useful/technical information to give the reader all the background information to the science of saving lives at sea. The RNLI is close to the hearts of the British public, who want to know more about their work today, but also historically how they have evolved. With archive material, first-person interviews of station commanders, rescuers, etc. plus scientific illustrations and maps, this book will be the first to bring together the history and technology, people and crews, triumphs and disasters of the RNLI together in one book.
