Is public opinion correct in judging the inefficacy of the legislative branch, or is the public mistaken in these harsh criticisms? "Congress: A Performance Appraisal" teaches students about this critical institution of American democracy by examining how successful the body is in carrying out its key functions, particularly representation, lawmaking, and checking the other branches of government. Rather than focusing on the institutional and procedural questions of how Congress is set up, what rules guide its actions, and how its members carry out their daily duties, Andrew J. Taylor asks: do these structures, procedures, behaviors, and outcomes serve the American people as they were meant to? Using a set of aspirations a good legislature should strive for and benchmarks to rate how close it comes to those aspirations, Taylor offers a unique approach to the discussion of Congress, its actions, and its efficacy as a legislature. Sure to prompt provocative classroom discussions, "Congress" is the perfect text for courses on American government and politics. Pipes--president of the Pacific Research Institute and an acknowledged expert on health care reform--reveals what Democrats in Congress "and" President Obama don't want you to know: Obamacare is even worse than most critics suspect. Debunking the myths that the current administration has touted, Pipes shows exactly what the new health care law will mean for you, your family, your doctor, and your wallet. She also reveals how, contrary to its promises, Obamacare will make health care more expensive, limit your options, lead to deteriorating medical care, and weaken America's already frail economy. The history of a nation-in-the-making should not be reduced to a selective heroic tradition, but should be a tolerant and continuing process of questioning and re-examintaion." Becoming Zimbabwe tracks the idea of national belonging and citizenship and explores the nature of state rule, the changing contours of the political economy, and the regional and international dimensions of the country's history. In their Introduction, Brian Raftopoulos and Alois Mlambo enlarge on these themes, and Gerald Mazarire's opening chapter sets the pre-colonial background. Sabelo Ndlovu-Gatsheni tracks the history up to World War II, and Alois Mlambo reviews developments in the settler economy and the emergence of nationalism leading to the Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) in 1965. The politics and economics of the UDI period, and the subsequent war of liberation, are covered by Joseph Mtisi, Munyaradzi Nyakudya and Teresa Barnes. After independence in 1980, Zimbabwe enjoyed a period of buoyancy and hope. James Muzondidya's chapter details the transition "from buoyancy to crisis", and Brian Raftopoulos concludes the book with an analysis of the decade-long crisis and the global political agreement which followed. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days Nelson Mandela is one of the great moral and political leaders of our time: an international hero whose lifelong dedication to the fight against racial oppression in South Africa won him the Nobel Peace Prize and the presidency of his country. Since his triumphant release in 1990 from more than a quarter-century of imprisonment, Mandela has been at the center of the most compelling and inspiring political drama in the world. As president of the African National Congress and head of South Africa's anti-apartheid movement, he was instrumental in moving the nation toward multiracial government and majority rule. He is revered everywhere as a vital force in the fight for human rights and racial equality. The foster son of a Thembu chief, Mandela was raised in the traditional, tribal culture of his ancestors, but at an early age learned the modern, inescapable reality of what came to be called apartheid, one of the most powerful and effective systems of oppression ever conceived. In classically elegant and engrossing prose, he tells of his early years as an impoverished student and law clerk in Johannesburg, of his slow political awakening, and of his pivotal role in the rebirth of a stagnant ANC and the formation of its Youth League in the 1950s. He describes the struggle to reconcile his political activity with his devotion to his family, the anguished breakup of his first marriage, and the painful separations from his children. He brings vividly to life the escalating political warfare in the fifties between the ANC and the government, culminating in his dramatic escapades as an underground leader and the notorious Rivonia Trial of 1964, at which he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Herecounts the surprisingly eventful twenty-seven years in prison and the complex, delicate negotiations that led both to his freedom and to the beginning of the end of apartheid. Finally he provides the ultimate inside account of the unforgettable events since his release that produced at last a free, multiracial democracy in South Africa. To millions of people around the world, Nelson Mandela stands, as no other living figure does, for the triumph of dignity and hope over despair and hatred, of self-discipline and love over persecution and evil. Features Summary The leader of South Africa's antiapartheid movement chronicles his life, including his tribal years, his time spent in prison, and his return to lead his people. One of the many ways in which the apartheid regime maintained its stranglehold in South Africa was through controlling the freedom of speech and the flow of information, in an effort to silence the voices of those who opposed it. United by the ideals of freedom and equality, but also nuanced by a wide variety of persuasions, the 'voices of liberation' were many: African nationalists, communists, trade-unionists, pan-Africanists, English liberals, human rights activists, Christians, Hindus, Muslims and Jews, to name but a few. The Voices of liberation series ensures that the debates and values that shaped the liberation movement are not lost. The series offers a unique combination of biographical information with selections from original speeches and writings in each volume. By providing access to the thoughts and writings of some of the many men and women who fought for the dismantling of apartheid, this series invites the contemporary reader to engage directly with the rich history of the struggle for democracy. This volume presents a brief biography of South Africa's first Nobel Peace Prize winner, Albert Luthuli, followed by a selection from the many speeches he made, first as President of the Natal branch of the African National Congress and then as President-General. The book concludes with a reflection on his legacy from a current perspective and a further reading list. But today those who said so then secretly approach us to ask: "How did you foresee all this?" By "this" they mean all the internal political mess the ANC has brought to itself since we wrote the first edition of this book. Indeed, a lot of "this" has taken place over the past three years. That is why the title of this second edition is The Fall of the ANC Continues." Political governance in South Africa continues to collapse. Scandals of corruption, evidence of nepotism, rampant maladministration in provinces, incompetence in public offices and a general decline in the quality of leadership are there for all to see. In the view of Prince Mashele and Mzukisi Qobo, this state of affairs has its origins in the messiness and collapse of the African National Congress. As helplessness deepens in our society, concerned citizens ask: "What will happen to South Africa?" The Fall of the ANC Continues seeks to answer this question of the fate that awaits the country. The author had insight into the character of the struggle and, as such could document the social, historical and political significance of the early years. Benson was secretary to the Treason Trial Defence Fund and had secret meetings with Mandela whilst he was underground. She was later banned and put in house arrest. All of this gave her the insight and drive to write this history of the ANC.

The New York Times bestseller! "The Fight shines a much needed light on the troubling games DC politicians and insiders play with the American people." -Sean Hannity "The Fight is a lesson plan for fighting back against the Washington DC political machine." - Mark Levin In The Fight, Dan Bongino picks up the story where his New York Times bestselling book Life Inside the Bubble ends, tackling current political and security issues and offering new solutions. From Hillary's emails to the security failings at the White House (including the drone crash and the fence jumper); from Charlie Hebdo to Bowe Bergdahl--the author examines how our current administration has allowed our security efforts to lapse both at home and abroad. He also offers solutions to the growing terrorist threat and how we can protect American citizens while also deconstructing what's wrong with our political process and what his experience running for office has taught him. As a former member of the elite Presidential Protection Division who served three Presidents, Bongino is uniquely qualified to provide a view from behind the curtain to warn readers about the political system that is failing them, and the security future that won't protect them. The majority of Americans only come into contact with security when they fly or enter their workplace. They are rarely able to become acquainted with the politicians they know from robo-calls and TV ads. Bongino has experienced the inner-workings of the national security apparatus and the failed political theater that we all feel but rarely understand. Using a mix of current events, an insider's analysis, and tales from his time protecting the president, he shows where clear and foreseeable leadership failures from our current administration led to grave consequences. From a broken political process to a president who consistently misreads the American people, he shows us where America has gone wrong and how we can fight back. 1979 paperback with 102 pages in good condition. Heaven and hell - Paperback with around 60 pages. R65 postage in SA. The First Book of Urizen as it was originally called, was composed in 1794 but printed only in 1818. It parodies the Book of Genesis by presenting the creation of the material world as a downfall. The process is initiated by Urizen when he separates himself from his fellow "Eternals" and thereby creates difference and self-consciousness. As Urizen falls into this void of his own making, Los reacts by building a material and temporal base below which Urizen cannot descend. There are only a handful of copies of the book. Copy G, available here, was sold anonymously at Sotheby's on 20 January 1852 for £8.15s. to Richard Monckton Milnes, First Lord Houghton. His son, the Earl of Crewe, sold it at Sotheby's on 30 March 1903 for £307 to the dealer Bernard Quaritch, probably acting for William A. White. White owned it the next month. It was sold posthumously from White's collection through A. S. W. Rosenbach to Lessing J. Rosenwald on 1 May 1929, for approximately $5,000. In 1945, it was given by Rosenwald to the Library of Congress, where it now resides.

Still an Inconvenient Youth Julius Malema Carries on More than a ringleader, a rabble-rouser and a rebel, Julius Malema is a new kind of cadre in South African political life, a radical product of 100 years of struggle politics and one of the first of the post-1994 leaders to emerge. Whether you love him or loathe him, he is undeniably one of the most controversial politicians of our time. Still An Inconvenient Youth traces Malemas life, from his early, poverty-stricken years in Limpopo to his joining the student structures of the ANC in the early 1990s, and his rapid rise through the partys ranks to become the president of the ANC Youth League in 2008 and his expulsion from the African National Congress in 2012. Forde looks at the continuing story of Julius Malema from his numerous court cases to his  bold move back into politics by founding new political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).Forde analyses the sources of Malemas wealth, exploring his seamless approach to business and politics. She situates Malema within the ANCs history and shows in unprecedented detail how he has perfected the practices that characterise a new struggle in which individuals extend their personal wealth and political power at the expense of the people. This insightful, meticulously researched account explores how a brave child has grown to become a grave inconvenience, not only to the ANC, but also, due to his style of politics, to South Africas fledgling democracy.  1988 / Hardcover / Good condition “This infectiously readable memoir by the most colorful and controversial Navy Secretary in memory provides the inside story of the origins and battles at home and abroad in building a 600-ship Navy. Young, bright, and ambitious, John Lehman came to office refusing to be just another figurehead. For the six years he served in the Reagan administration, he helped forge an aggressive strategy for achieving maritime supremacy and for rebuilding the U.S. Navy. In this bestselling personal account of those years between 1981 and 1987, he speaks with candor and authority about the ills of the military establishment and the struggles and frustrations he encountered. Lehman reveals instances of political intrigue, including his dramatic Oval Office confrontation with Admiral Rickover at the time of the admiral's firing in 1982 and battles within the Pentagon and Congress. His explanation of the administration's new naval strategy has been called the most comprehensive and lucid ever written, and his descriptions of the Navy in combat over Libya, Lebanon, and Grenada are packed with fascinating details that only an insider could know. The bold insights he presents of a critical turning point in the Cold War will continue to inform and, with the addition of new material to this paperback edition, promise to renewed discussion of the role of the U.S. Navy then and into the future.”

The Youth League's foundation in 1944 by Ashley Peter Mda, Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Oliver Tambo marked the rise of a new generation of leadership of South Africa's black African population. Clive Glaser's The ANC Youth League presents the first overview of the ANC Youth League from its origins in the 1940s to the controversies of the present Malema era, providing implicit and explicit comparisons between earlier Youth League and contemporary Youth League. It analyses the ideology and tactics of its founders, some of whom (notably Mandela and Tambo) later became iconic figures in South African history. It also shows how the early Youth League gave birth not only to the modern ANC but also to its rival, the Pan African Congress. Dormant for many years, the Youth League, infused with the tradition of the militant youth politics of the 1980s, re-emerged in the transition era under the leadership of Peter Mokaba. Throughout its history the Youth League tried to 'dynamise' and criticise the ANC from within while remaining devoted to, and dependent on, the mother body. Very little scholarly work has been written on the post-1990 Youth League; The ANC Youth League showcases that throughout its history the Youth League has struggled to find a balance between loyalty and rebellion. About the Author Clive Glaser  lectures in History at Wits University. He has published widely on the history of youth politics, youth culture, crime and sexuality in South Africa. He is the author of  Bo-Tsotsi: The Youth Gangs of Soweto 1935-1976  and co-author of volume 6 in the series From Protest to Challenge, entitled  Challenge and Victory, 1980-1990.
