Framed Set of Four Mineral Maxi Cards - Hein Botha designed Stamps 1984 See blog by Fred Haynes on "south-african-mineral-maxicards" "A Maximum Card (often referred to as a maxicard) is a philatelic postcard with a postage stamp placed on the picture side of the card. The stamp and card match or in some way relate to each other. Maxicards are officially released by many of the world’s postal services, but they are also generated personally by individuals combining a stamp issue with a simple souvenir postcard. In most cases, the cancellation is also related to the image on the front of the card and the stamp. As a collector of minerals, mining and geology on stamps South Africa’s 1984 four-stamp set commemorating some of the country’s strategic resources was a fine add to my collection. It was not until a couple of years ago, however, that I learned that the officially released Maximum Cards S10-S13 for these stamps featured geologic maps. Not only would this satisfy another of my topical interests (maps on stamps), but as a retired geologist I found the inclusion of geologic maps on the “Maxicards” most interesting. Thanks to a tip provided by a fellow member of The CartoPhilatelic Society on the club’s shared discussion site, I was able to purchase a complete set via an online source. Now it seemed only fitting that I [Fred] research the stamps and maps a bit.... South Africa is known for both its gold production in the Witwatersrand region and for its dominance in the diamond industry provided by the kimberlite pipes in the eastern end of the Northern Cape Province. But the resource rich country has more than gold and diamonds. Spitfire PK350 is the only late-mark Spitfire, an F Mk 22, to have ever been restored to full flying status. She had no restrictions on her airframe and with four fully serviceable 20mm cannons, she was as good as the day she came off the production line in July 1945 near Birmingham, England.She first flew as a restored aircraft on 29 March 1980 at the hands of one John McVicar Jack Malloch. By then a legend in his adopted country, Rhodesia, Malloch had in 1977 been entrusted by the hierarchy of the Rhodesian Air Force to restore SR64, as she was then known. In two and half years, Jack Malloch and his trusted engineers, with critical help from the Rhodesian and South African air forces, completely restored SR64 to flying condition. The fact that she was fitted with a propeller made by a German company added a sweet irony to a project that had to contend with sanctions imposed by Britain, the original country of manufacture, and highlighted the enterprising spirit of the team. This was possible because Malloch, with the backing of the Rhodesian government, had built up a successful charter airfreight company that assumed different guises, depending on where it was operating, to bypass sanctions. Malloch's network thus facilitated his quest to restore and once again fly a Spitfire such as he had flown in the RAF during the Second World War.Some fascinating insights are revealed in this account. From the test pilot who first flew her as PK350 on 25 July 1945, the reader is taken on a journey through the aircraft's complete life, with the project's lead engineer and most of the surviving pilots who flew her gracing the story with their memories. For two years PK350 delighted those fortunate enough to see her fly, mostly around Salisbury (Harare) airport. Spanish, Military, Buckle with belt, Franco   Spanish military Brass Buckle and Belt, is vintage, original and complete.   Brass Eagle buckle and belt from the Spanish Civil war area, Franco.   This brass buckle design is from the Spanish Civil War period.  It has lovely details in the feathers, cross, crown, and talons.  The front face is 56 mm x 65 mm, with the raised eagle image.  Has a cross across it’s body and a crown floating over its head.  There is lots of aged patina to the piece.  It is worn, with surface scratches, no makers mark. The red enamel has been bashed in places as can be seen in the picture and is almost complete gone. The reverse has a hook closure a loop for the leather belt to attach. The ‘once’ black wide 49 mm leather belt is in poor condition with age appropriate wear to it’s finish as shown in the photo. On March they introduced Amos 'n' Andy, which went on to become one of the most popular and longest running programs in radio history. During the height of its popularity almost the entire country listened to the 15-minute, Monday through Friday adventures of Amos 'n' Andy. Department stores open in the evening piped in the broadcasts so shoppers wouldn't miss an episode; movie theaters scheduled their features to end just prior to the start of Amos ‘n’ Andy so they too could pipe it in. The characters were members of The Mystic Knights of the Sea Lodge, of which George Stevens was "The Kingfish".
