All sites are ranked into one of three categories of priority: essential (the region’s best), excellent (top sites but expendable to a time-limited visitor) and local interest (ideal for those looking for new areas to explore).  Stunning book.!! Book in VG Condition. Glossy pages.. Heavy book in Slip case,. Slip case slightly damaged at one corner. All else in VG condition. A Treasure of knowledge.   "The Complete Book of Southern African Mammals" covers each of Southern Africa's 343 mammal species. From the diminutive shrews to the weird and wonderful bats, the carnivores, primates and ungulates (hoofed animals), this guide represents the work of 72 leading authorities in the field of mammal research. More than 400 colour photographs, many submitted by the region's most renowned wildlife photographers, were selected from an initial shortlist of 1,000. Wherever possible these portray the animals in their natural environments and many depict interesting aspects of behaviour too. The guide is divided into three main sections. The first and most extensive section covers land mammals - from shrews, moles and bats to primates, rabbits, rodents, primates, carnivores and ungulates. The second section embraces the marine mammals, comprising the whales, dolphins and seals. The third part of the guide covers exotic (introduced) species, such as the house rat, the grey squirrel and the fallow deer. In most instances, the species are introduced in a general text that is followed by more detailed biological notes covering aspects such as habitat, breeding, food and feeding methods and social system. A distribution map is provided for each animal. Supplementary essays at the front of the guide offer an even deeper insight into the subject, covering evolution, mammal classification, habitats, mammal adaptations and conservation. Selected further reading, a glossary of terms and a list of alternative names for each of the major languages within the sub-region are also provided.

Each animal group (carnivores, primates, antelope, rats and mice, reptiles, birds) is briefly introduced; but the main focus of this book is the photographs, mostly life-size. These images enable immediate identification of the animals responsible for the droppings. To confirm identity, summary tables give details of average width, length and typical contents of droppings (feathers, twigs, leaves, sand, etc.). This should become a recommended reference for rangers and field guides in the region; and it will be of use to anyone with an interest in wildlife, and even to those who simply enjoy walking in the wild and observing the tracks and signs they encounter. Our books are protected with a removable plastic cover and sent with care. Condition: Good. There's nothing quite like it anywhere in the world. It's a visual tour de force - complete with high drama, raw tragedy, sound effects and stunning costumes. Scripted by Nature and choreographed by the weather, hunger and sheer chance, it's the spectacular world of southern African wildlife. The variety of the landscape, the extremes of climate, and the huge diversity of vegetation create ideal conditions for a fraternity of wild animals unequalled anywhere else on Earth. More than 900 species of birds cohabit freely with 338 mammal species, a diverse population of reptiles and amphibians, and an inestimable number of insects. In South Africa alone, nearly six million hectares of land are devoted to conservation. There is a growing awareness of the importance of wildlife heritage, and the necessity for its continued survival, in spite of industrial development and the encroachment of man. Fuelling this awareness is the commitment of a group of dedicated photographers who spend days, months and years in the wild pursuing a dream: to capture on film the extraordinary lives of animals in a way that's never been done before.
