This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 13 working days This never-before heard jazz classic documents one of the most historically important working bands in all of Jazz history, a band that was both short-lived and, until now, thought to be frustratingly under-recorded. The concert, which took place at the famed New York hall on November 29, 1957, was preserved on newly-discovered tapes made by Voice of America for a later radio broadcast that were located at the Library of Congress in Washington DC earlier this year. Monkand Coltranehad been working together for a solid four months by the time they set foot on stage at Carnegie Hall that night. By all accounts, Coltrane had been tentative early on in the Five Spot run, challenged at first by Monk¿s quirky melodies and chord changes, but the 51 minutes of music captured in pristine sound quality on At Carnegie Hall, present the quartet, which was completed by bassist Ahmed Abdul-Malikand drummer Shadow Wilson, at the height of their powers. The tapes from that evening at Carnegie Hall were inadequately labeled, filed away amongst the Voice of America¿s vast collection of recordings, and apparently forgotten until January 2005 when Larry Applebaum, a supervisor and jazz specialist at the Library of Congress, came upon them by accident during the routine process of digitally transferring the Library¿s collection for preservation purposes. Applebaum noticed a set of tapes simply labeled ¿sp. Event 11/29/57 carnegie jazz concert (#1),¿ with one of the tapes barring the sole marking ¿T. Monk.¿ Until now, remarkably little recorded documentation of Monk¿s quartet with Coltrane has been known to exist, a fact that makes this finding all the more significant. Features Summary This never-before heard jazz classic documents one of the most historically important working bands in all of Jazz history, a band that was both short-lived and... It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 10 - 15 working days "I didn't approach this as a tribute record," states Joe Lovano, dispelling right off the bat any preconception that his new album Bird Songs--an exploration of the Charlie Parker songbook--is a mere retread. Lovano's 22nd album for Blue Note Records (the release of which will mark his 20th year on the label) breaks the mold of Bird tribute records. Bird Songs is a thrillingly adventurous, thoroughly modern, and uniquely personal look at one of the most influential figures in jazz history by one of the most important voices in the music today. Us Five turned out to be the perfect vehicle for his exploration. Lovano's dynamic young band--which features drummers Otis Brown III and Francisco Mela, bassist Esperanza Spalding, and pianist James Weidman--has been captivating audiences around the world for several years now. Their debut recording--2009's Folk Art--was a wide-ranging set of Lovano's original compositions that resulted in Us Five being awarded Best Small Ensemble of the Year at the 2010 JJA Jazz Awards and winning the Best Jazz Group of the Year category in the 2010 DownBeat Critics Poll. Lovano completed a double-triple of awards by also winning the JJA's Musician and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year, and DownBeat's Jazz Artist and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year. "Putting this recording together I kept wondering how Bird would have developed within these tunes, not just as the incredible soloist that he was but as an arranger and band leader. From what we know about him it is clear that he was into the world of music beyond so called Jazz and Be Bop and I'm sure we would have all been surprised at every turn in his approach just as we were with Miles, Coltrane, Rollins and Coleman, four of his most distinguished and celebrated disciples. At the young age of 34 Charlie Parker passed and left us with all of these questions about what would be. This recording is my humble attempt to answer some of those questions in my own way." Features Summary "I didn't approach this as a tribute record," states Joe Lovano, dispelling right off the bat any preconception that his new album Bird Songs--an exploration of the Charlie Parker songbook--is a mere retread... This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 8 working days With THE SOOTHSAYER, Wayne Shorter fronts a large ensemble for the first time in his solo endeavors. Like his previous sessions, Shorter's assorted guests are drawn from the most notable groups of the time. McCoy Tyner from Coltrane's quartet, rhythm-mates Ron Carter and Tony Williams from Shorter's employer Miles Davis, and Freddie Hubbard who shared horn duties with the saxophonist in Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers are all present, producing a huge sound lead by Shorter's artistic vision. Also on board is alto saxophonist James Spaulding who is the perfect compliment to Shorter's eclectic tenor. SOOTHSAYER is the fourth Blue Note session for Shorter and his mature style is clearly developed here. His uniquesense of melody in the modal style of the '60s is evident from the opening "Lost", featuring expressive solo interludesthat glide over a floating waltz. Williams shines, as usual, on up-tempo numbers like the whirling "Angola" and the quirky title track, masterfully shaping the grooves like a sculptor. A beautiful respite comes with the exquisite "Lady Day" for the great Billie Holiday, featuring stunning work by Tyner. Finally, the session closes on an interesting note with Shorter's arrangement of Sibelius' "Valse Triste". Features Summary With THE SOOTHSAYER, Wayne Shorter fronts a large ensemble for the first time in his solo endeavors. His personnel had become stable: alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Bill Evans, long-serving bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Jimmy Cobb. His band played a mixture of pop standards and bebop originals by Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Dizzy Gillespie, and Tadd Dameron. As with all bebop-based jazz, Davis's groups improvised on the chord changes of a given song. Read more on Last.fm. Nowhere is this more evident than on lead single I Need A Dollar - theme for HBO s How to Make It in America. The first generation American offspring of Panamanian parents, Aloe has become what writer-activist Amiri Baraka once said of John Coltrane: He is a singular scope of feeling...a more fixed traveler who has found cohesion in art and life. The path from his debut Shine Through (2006) to Good Things is akin to the maturation of Marvin Gaye between That s the Way Love Is and What s Going On. The two are companion pieces in that they show who the artist is, what they stand for, and define the soul music of their time.
