Thornton Wilder -- winner of three Pulitzer Prizes (one for fiction; two for drama) -- was not only one of America's greatest men-of-letters, but one of the most popular and most enjoyed. In addition to such highly regarded and popular novels as The Bridge of San Luis Rey and The Ides of March, he was one of our most successful playwrights. To this day, Our Town, The Matchmaker, and The Skin of Our Teeth remain among the best-loved and most-produced plays in the canon. To many contemporary playwrights, Wilder is -- together with Gertrude Stein, whom he championed -- the font of experimental drama in America. The diversity of form in his best-known works proves his mastery. Though his full-length works were few, he is widely perceived as one of this century's major American dramatists. Features Summary Volume Two of the collected short plays by one of the greatest American playwrights of the 20th century. Now available once more here is the author's long out-of-print first collection of one-acts... Author Thornton Wilder (Author), A. Featuring the best of her stories, the book includes pieces that were written over four decades, including stories from her debut collection, The Lagoon and Other Stories. First published in 1951, those stories were written while Frame was confined in a mental hospital. When the collection won the Hubert Church Award, Frame was spared a controversial brain operation. The stories in this new book also include selections from You Are Now Entering the Human Heart, published in the 1980s after a hiatus from writing. As the last stories she published before her death, her writings from this time reveal Frame's unflinching ability to explore the drama of madness, isolation, and identity. This new book also includes five short stories that have not been collected before, completing a volume that testifies to the brilliance of Janet Frame's life and literary talent. In this never-before-published story, Tempe recalls the case that lured her from a promising career in academia into the grim but addictive world of criminal investigation. Three more stories take Tempe from the low country of the Florida Everglades, where she makes a grisly discovery in the stomach of an eighteen-foot Burmese python, to the heights of Mount Everest, where a frozen corpse is unearthed. Scott Fitzgerald, iconic author of The Great Gatsby and Tender Is the Night. All eighteen short fictions collected here were lost in one sense or another: physically lost, coming to light only recently; lost in the turbulence of Fitzgerald's later life; lost to readers because his editors sometimes did not understand what he was trying to write. These fascinating stories offer a new insight into the arc of Fitzgerald's career, and demonstrate his stylistic agility and imaginative power as a writer at the forefront of Modern literature. Praise for I'd Die for You: `Superbly edited and annotated, this richly fascinating miscellany is a marvellous reminder of what was lost when, at forty-four, a coronary killed Fitzgerald' Sunday Times `Forward-thinking for their time... Fitzgerald was a master of short story writing' The Times `This much-vaunted collection of stories... is a ragtag bundle of surprises, curios, irrelevancies and delights... We can marvel at the strength of his imagination, his display of elegance and precision' Sunday Telegraph `Readers will find much to enjoy in this gorgeously produced book' New York Times `A beguiling meditation on the dark side of wealth and the American dream' Independent Features Summary Bold, fascinating and hitherto unseen: this beautiful Scribner collection brings together unpublished short stories by F. This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 8 - 15 working days This brand new edition of short stories comprises the best of James Robertson's work, collected together here for the first time. They range in setting from a dysfunctional safari park to a dentist's surgery, from the poverty of hope of a reservation in South Dakota to the nightmare vision of a future Scotland riven by ethnic cleansing, from friendships strong in adversity to marriages heading for the rocks. Nothing is quite what it seems in these stories. Running through them is an undercurrent of optimism tinged with despair, as the personal meets the political and individual men and women make choices that will change their lives forever. Surreal, realistic, angry, philosophical, funny and humane, Robertson's shorter fiction explores the lives of his characters with the same deftness of touch that has brought critical acclaim for novels such as "And the Land Lay Still" and "The Testament of Gideon Mack".
