Clarke's classic in which he ponders humanity's future and possible evolution When the silent spacecraft arrived and took the light from the world, no one knew what to expect. When they finally showed themselves it was a shock, but one that humankind could now cope with, and an era of peace, prosperity and endless leisure began. But the children of this utopia dream strange dreams of distant suns and alien planets, and begin to evolve into something incomprehensible to their parents, and soon they will be ready to join the Overmind...and, in a grand and thrilling metaphysical climax, leave the Earth behind.  Merde Actually by Stephen Clarke   'Edgier than Bryson, hits harder than Mayle'  The Times   A year after arriving in France, Englishman  Paul West  is still struggling with some fundamental questions: What is the best way to scare a gendarme? Why are there no health warnings on French  nudist  beaches? And is it really polite to sleep with your boss's  mistress ? Paul opens his  English tea room, and mutates (temporarily) into a Parisian waiter; samples the pleasures of typically French hotel-room afternoons; and, on a return visit to the UK, sees the full horror of a  British office party  through Parisian eyes. Meanwhile, he continues his search for the perfect French mademoiselle. But will Paul find  l'amour éternel, or will it all end in  merde   ? MERDE ACTUALLY   In his second comedy of errors, Paul West continues to sabotage the entente cordiale. Author's apology:  'I'd just like to say sorry to all the suppository fans out there, because in this book there are no suppositories. There are, however, lots of courgettes, and I see this as progress. Suppositories to courgettes - I think it proves that I'm developing as a writer.' Stephen Clarke

But the continent conceals multiple secrets, including the Holy Grail: explanations of its saga over the previous centuries. Africa's Future tells the tale of Africa's economic evolution, revealing unique prisms for understanding the continent's panoramic story, one of triumph over the lasting influences of nature and multiple political tragedies. It explains why from Roman times to 1500 CE Africa went backwards, evolving slowly, growing later, improving recently, and how its modern and archaic economies coexist uneasily today. Modern Africa developed diverse economic pathways to betterment - yet survivalist economies litter the landscape. Its paradox of "subsistence with many faces" coexists amidst the tiny middle class, growing rich, and many more poor expected in the future. Clarke provides fresh and challenging insights into Africa's economies and future, offering seasoned views on a continent of unlocked potential which has witnessed many false dawns. Not "poor" but poorly managed, Africa holds greater promise, its destiny revealed by its history. Meanwhile, in Sri Lanka, a young astronomy student, Ranjit Subramanian, becomes obsessed with a three-hundred-year-old theorem that promises to unlock the secrets of the universe. While Ranjit studies the problem, tensions grow between the nations of the world and a UN taskforce headed up by China, America and Russia code-named Silent Thunder begins bombing volatile regimes into submission. On the eve of the invasion of Earth a space elevator is completed, helped in part by Ranjit, which will herald a new type of Olympics to be held on the Moon. But when alien forces arrive Ranjit is forced to question his own actions, in a bid to save the lives of not just his own family but of all of humankind. A search for his dad, who may or may not have joined the army and gone to Iraq. But most of all, his is a search for truth. As Miller says, "Sometimes you have to tell the truth about some of the stuff you've done so that people will believe you when you tell them the truth about other stuff you haven't done." In" Exley" as in his previous bestselling novel, "An Arsonist's Guide to Writers' Homes in New England," Brock Clarke takes his reader into a world that is both familiar and disorienting, thought-provoking and thoroughly entertaining. Accident Page Clarke is a 40-year-old-happily married woman who lives with her 44-year-old husband, Brad Clarke, her 15-year-old daughter, Allyson and 7-year-old son Andrew. One night Brad goes on an unexpected business trip to Cleveland and Allyson reports she is going to have dinner with her friend Chloe and Chloe's father, Trygve Thorensen. Instead Allyson goes out with Chloe and two older boys named Jamie Applegate and Phillip Chapman. While crossing the Golden Gate Bridge the teenagers collide with supposed senator's wife Laura Hutchinson. Phillip is killed; Jamie survives with only a small cut; Chloe suffers leg damage, a broken pelvis and a shattered hip; and Allyson has severe head trauma. Both girls are rushed to the hospital, while Trygve and Page arrive before the surgeries. Page is unable to reach Brad until after the surgery has begun, and Brad is outraged that she did not consult him beforehand. She informs him that Allyson would have died at six'o'clock if the surgery had not been performed. One hour later, Brad arrives at the hospital and leaves for their house without Page. Later, Page confronts him as to why he is home early from his "trip" and he confesses that he has been cheating on her. Soon afterwards Brad disappears several times. Eventually Page's mother, Maribelle, and sister Alexis arrive in San Francisco and laze about the house while Allison remains in the hospital. One night after dinner, Page rages at her mother, demanding why she pretends that she did not know that her father molested her and her sister when they were children. Soon she forces Brad to move out and sends her mother and sister back to New York. By then she and Trygve had confessed their feelings toward each other. For four months, Allyson remains in a coma and Andrew, who has attempted to run away, is taken to see his sister. Soon Trygve and his children Nick, Bjorn and Chloe go to a lake for the weekend, and Allyson awakens from her coma. When Page goes to join them at the lake, she confesses to Trygve that she is pregnant with his child, and they begin to plan their wedding.    Condition of book Book in good condition, however inside the first and back page have yellow spots from age.

When Hitler invaded Poland, little did he realise that, not only was he taking on the allies, but also a group of Boy Scouts from Streetly, known as the 'Yellow Six'. Their hilarious attempts to assist the war effort are chronicled by their modestly named L*E*A*D*E*R. Whether helping with the construction of air raid shelters or collecting silver paper, the "Six" leave a trail of havoc behind them whilst their "tracking" adventures in Sutton Park cause consternation to American GI's canoodling with local girls. First published by Penguin Books, this new edition should attract yet more readers to the author's work. James Clarke, now resident in South Africa, has built up an international reputation both as a journalist and for his humorous writings. The book is complete with some wonderful illustrations by his talented daughter, Julie Clarke.

Empires of Oil: Corporate Oil in Barbarian Worlds by Duncan Clarke (Hardcover)   Revealing the huge challenges that the world's oil empires will face in the 21st century, this razor-sharp analysis of contemporary geopolitics—combined with a deep knowledge of global history—shows exactly why these empires are declining. It explains where the new empires of oil will be around the world, which of the hidden threats and unknown enemies are (and will be) the most serious, and where companies and governments have gone wrong and how they can improve their global strategies. The decline of the American oil empire, the strategy at the Kremlin, the state oil companies in China, and the mini-empires in the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America are all explored, and help to explain how the world will change because of global battles over the commodity that underpins our daily lives.

Paperback. English. Publisher: Orion. 2002. In fair/good condition. Inspector John Rebus has messed up badly this time, so badly that he's been sent to a kind of reform school for damaged cops. While there among the last-chancers known as "resurrection men," he joins a covert mission to gain evidence of a drug heist orchestrated by three of his classmates. But the group has been assigned an unsolved murder that may have resulted from Rebus's own mistake. Now Rebus can't determine if he's been set up for a fall or if his disgraced classmates are as ruthless as he suspects. When Detective Sergeant Siobhan Clarke discovers that her investigation of an art dealer's murder is tied to Rebus's inquiry, the two-protÈgÈ and mentor-join forces. Soon they find themselves in the midst of an even bigger scandal than they had imagined-a plot with conspirators in every corner of Scotland and deadly implications about their colleagues. With the brilliant eye for character and place that earned him the name "the Dickens of Edinburgh," Ian Rankin delivers a page-turning novel of intricate suspense.
