This coin has been in circulation and out of currency use or handled by others since about 6 years ago.  Photos recently taken and put back into safe packaging.  They have been in a collection in our family home.   I do not know the value thereof, most of these coins circulated quite a lot which means the quality is secondhand and deteriorated on some coins more than others.  Thank you

Fittingly, the same year marks the centenary of the birth, on 27 October 1917, of Oliver Reginald Tambo. This product series commemorates his legacy by depicting the roles he played at various stages of his life and political career in securing a free, democratic and culturally dynamic South Africa ‘Comrade OR’, as he was affectionately known, was a founding member of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League and between 1944 and his untimely passing in 1993, took on various leadership roles in the party including General Secretary, National Chairperson, Deputy President and President. Although ‘Comrade OR’ did not fully experience the liberated and democratic dispensation we now enjoy, he spent the better part of his life standing up for those very ideals – for this, his legacy lives on. The series consists of a 1 oz pure-gold R500 proof coin, a 1 oz sterling-silver R50 proof coin, a base-metal R50 non-circulating legal tender coin and a R5 commemorative circulation coin. The Nelson Mandela R5 set combines two circulation coins which are both significant in terms of South Africa 's history and numismatic tradition. In keeping with South African numismatic tradition, the outgoing President is depicted on the obverse of the highest denomination circulation coin a year after he has left office. Therefore in the year 2000, former President Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was featured. The 2000 R5 coin featured a smiling Nelson Mandela wearing his iconic "Madiba" shirt. This info rmal depiction of a head of state differed from the norm. The coin captures the character of Nelson Mandela. He is portrayed not only as a symbol of the new democratic South Africa, but also as the person people recognize and relate to.
