His first Afrikaans album, Oomblik van Waansin (with a title that is a tribute to Pink Floyds Momentary Lapse of Reason) is a deeply personal and lyrical chronicle of his own journey: It is about the way I grew up, my mom and dad, social influences. In 2001 he won a Geraas Award as the Best Songwriter in Afrikaans for Oomblik van Waansin. Mel's affinity for conceptual stage shows was demonstrated again in 2005 with the musical play Flight of Bird during the Aardklop Arts Festival in Potchefstroom. The production was nominated for an AngloGold Ashanti Smeltkroes Award. Composing soundtracks for movies and television drama has become one of his ways of expressing and stretching himself musically. He has created songs and incidental music for Song for Katryn 2 (with Valiant Swart), The Hitchhiker, Andries Plak, Running Riot with Bill Flynn, Dryfsand and Rainbow Skellums.
