This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days This book was inspired by a challenge from one of Douglas's students: "How could you, a black woman, possibly be a Christian?" Reflection on the historical sins of Christians, particularly the role of white Christians in countenancing the lynching of African Americans, led her to broader questions: What is it about Christianity that could lend itself to racism and its violent abuses? What is it about Christianity that has allowed it to be both a bane and a blessing for black people? Douglas examines the various "distortions" in early Christianity--particularly the influence of platonic dualism, with its denigration of the body, and the alliance with imperial power. She shows how this later helped support white racism, just as it later fed homophobia and other distortions in the black church. Nevertheless, she ends by sharing an inspiring account of her own Christian faith, and why she is still a Christian. Features Summary Reflects on the historical sins of Christians, particularly the role of white Christians in countenancing the lynching of African Americans. This exploration then leads the author to broader questions.. Author Kelly Brown Douglas Publisher Orbis Books (USA) Release date 20051102 Pages 224 ISBN 1-57075-609-0 ISBN 13 978-1-57075-609-2

Perhaps that question arises as often as any other among perplexed Christians who want to know God's will about choosing a marriage partner, what career to enter, whether or not to move-or a hundred other issues. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days In 1637 two Portuguese missionaries undertake a perilous search for their Jesuit tutor missing on the hostile islands of Japan. The Shogun and his Samurai have purged the land of Western influence, rooting out Christians and subjecting them to a fate worse than death - torture until they renounce the word of God. Father Rodrigues knows that if they are discovered, they face the same brutal treatment as the persecuted Christian peasantry; the same mistreatment that - if the rumours are to be believed - caused their tutor to renounce his faith. The deeper Rodrigues journeys into Japan, the closer he comes to the truth, and the more he finds himself questioning the meaning of God's silence in answer to their prayers and to the suffering of the Japanese Christians. 2007 paperback with 434 pages in good condition. R50 postage in SA. Inscribed and signed on front page by Pinard.                                                                                                                                                          A narrative that has its roots in the dark Middle Ages of Europe, and the brutal Roman Catholic inquisitions! Will history repeat itself? A saga of the persecuted French Huguenots, Jacques Pinard and his wife, Hester, who find refuge at the Cape of Good Hope in 1688. Almost 300 years later, a distant relative and son of Africa, Rueben Pinard, stumbles upon his French Huguenot heritage. His subsequent supernatural awakening to the faith of his forefathers and his prophetic calling. A vision, beginning with the powerful prophetic utterance: "You must go to the land of your ancestors!" An end-time scenario. A mysterious Jewish remnant. History repeats itself - a place of refuge. The Holy See, Opus Dei - a Personal Prelature. Apollyon/Abaddon - the 'Beast' of the last days - the man of sin. Global persecution of Christians. Implementation of Satan's seal of ownership - the infamous 666! The Great Tribulation. Battle of Jerusalem. The Return of the Son of Man with power and might! Thy Kingdom Come! Jesus' 1000 year reign from Jerusalem. Although the theme of this book is classified as fiction, a portion of the content is semi-autobiographical. The balance is premised upon certain Biblical, historical and contemporary facts. The backdrop being the last book in the Bible: the book of Revelation. Through the medium of faction (fact and fiction), the author weaves a realistic and exciting end-time drama around the book of Revelation. His purpose is to encourage everyone, everywhere, to read the last book of the Bible. The book of Revelation is the 'roadmap' of prophecy for these the last days! The author, together with his wife lives in Franschhoek (French Corner), South Africa, where theyadminister an end-time prophetic Internet ministry. They are committed Christians and are respectively 8th generation French Huguenot and Dutch religious refugee descendants. Because of this they have a rich Christian heritage. Therefore, the blood of the martyrs runs 'thickly' through their veins.

Excerpt from The Catholic World, Vol. 38 ONE among the events which have greatly affected the development of Christianity was the religious movement of the sixteenth century called Protestantism. Millions of Christians within a'short period of time separated themselves from what they had been taught to believe was the Christian Church. It is unnatural, as it is unchristian, that men who have a common nature and a common destiny, and who acknowledge the same Mediator and Saviour, should stand towards each other in hostile attitude. All is not right where such a state of things exists. To produce such results there must have been error somewhere, and guilt too. For humanity means common brotherhood. Truth is one. And Christianity is, in the highest sense of the words, Love and Truth. These disagreeable facts are becoming more and more apparent, and people are becoming more and more convinced of these primary truths. Who knows? perhaps the time has come when, if men would consider impartially the causes which have brought about the deplorable religious dissensions and divisions existing among Christians, a movement would set in on all sides towards unity, and the prayer of Christ that "all who believe in him might be made perfect in unity" would find its fulfilment. This is our hope. To contribute to this result we labor. It is in the spirit of impartiality and charity that the investigation of this subject should be pursued. (This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) 'The central miracle asserted by Christians is the Incarnation. They say that God became Man. Every other miracle prepares the way for this, or results from this.' This is the key statement of 'Miracles', in which C. S. Lewis shows that a Christian must not only accept but rejoice in miracles as a testimony of the unique personal involvement of God in his creation. Using his characteristic lucidity and wit to develop his argument, Lewis challenges the rationalists, agnostics and deists on their own grounds and provides a poetic and joyous affirmation that miracles really do occur in our everyday lives. He spent quality time with Jerry Falwell, visited Jewish cadets at West Point, attended the world's biggest Christian retail show, embarked on a road trip with the rabbi with the largest gentile following since Jesus, journeyed to the Holy Land with a band of repentant Christian pilgrims, and broke bread with George W. Bush and five hundred fellow Jewish Republicans. "A Match Made in Heaven" is the penetrating, engaging, and often hilarious narrative of Chafets's determined quest to get to the root of a very serious question: Why do evangelicals support Israel so strongly? Equal parts history, comedy, travelogue, and political tract, it is a smart and adventurous odyssey along a rapidly changing religious and political border. Naturally, it did not pass through the ages unaltered. The Menorah explores the cultural and intellectual history of the Western world's oldest continuously used religious symbol. This meticulously researched yet deeply personal history explains how the menorah illuminates the great changes and continuities in Jewish culture, from biblical times to modern Israel. Though the golden seven-branched menorahs of Moses and of the Jerusalem Temple are artifacts lost to history, the best-known menorah image survives on the Arch of Titus in Rome. Commemorating the Roman destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE, the arch reliefs depict the spoils of the Temple, the menorah chief among them, as they appeared in Titus's great triumphal parade in 71 CE. Steven Fine recounts how, in 2012, his team discovered the original yellow ochre paint that colored the menorah--an event that inspired his search for the history of this rich symbol from ancient Israel through classical history, the Middle Ages, and on to our own tumultuous times. Surveying artifacts and literary sources spanning three thousand years--from the Torah and the ruins of Rome to yesterday's news--Fine presents the menorah as a source of fascination and illumination for Jews, Samaritans, Christians, and even Freemasons. A symbol for the divine, for continuity, emancipation, national liberation, and redemption, the menorah features prominently on Israel's state seal and continues to inspire and challenge in surprising ways. One of the many ways in which the apartheid regime maintained its stranglehold in South Africa was through controlling the freedom of speech and the flow of information, in an effort to silence the voices of those who opposed it. United by the ideals of freedom and equality, but also nuanced by a wide variety of persuasions, the 'voices of liberation' were many: African nationalists, communists, trade-unionists, pan-Africanists, English liberals, human rights activists, Christians, Hindus, Muslims and Jews, to name but a few. The Voices of liberation series ensures that the debates and values that shaped the liberation movement are not lost. The series offers a unique combination of biographical information with selections from original speeches and writings in each volume. By providing access to the thoughts and writings of some of the many men and women who fought for the dismantling of apartheid, this series invites the contemporary reader to engage directly with the rich history of the struggle for democracy. This volume presents a brief biography of South Africa's first Nobel Peace Prize winner, Albert Luthuli, followed by a selection from the many speeches he made, first as President of the Natal branch of the African National Congress and then as President-General. The book concludes with a reflection on his legacy from a current perspective and a further reading list. Claimed by two peoples and sacred to three faiths, for the last three decades the city has been associated with violent struggle and civil unrest. As the peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis reach their conclusion, the final, and most difficult issue is the status of Jerusalem. How and to what extent will these two nations share this city? How will Christians, Muslims and Jews in Jerusalem and around the world redefine their relationship to Jerusalem when the dust settles on the final agreement? Will the Israelis and Palestinians even be able to reach an agreement at all? Menachem Klein, one of the leading experts on the history and politics of Jerusalem, cuts through the rhetoric on all sides to explain the actual policies of the Israelis and Palestinians toward the city. He describes the "facts on the ground" that make their competing claims so fraught with tension and difficult to reconcile. He shows how Palestinian national institutions have operated clandestinely since the Israelis occupied the eastern half of the city, and how the Israelis have tried to suppress them. Ultimately, he points the way toward a compromise solution but insists that the struggle for power and cultural recognition will likely continue to be apermanent feature of life in this complicated, multi-cultural city.
