  Its common names include red cedar, eastern red-cedar, eastern redcedar, Virginian juniper, eastern juniper, red juniper, pencil cedar, and aromatic cedar is a species of juniper native to eastern North America from southeastern Canada to the Gulf of Mexico and east of the Great Plains. Further west it is replaced by the related Juniperus scopulorum (Rocky Mountain Juniper) and to the southwest by Juniperus ashei (Ashe Juniper). Juniperus virginiana is a dense slow-growing coniferous evergreen tree that may never become more than a bush on poor soil, but is ordinarily from 520 m tall, with a short trunk 30100 cm diameter. The oldest tree reported, from West Virginia, was 940 years old. The bark is reddish-brown, fibrous, and peels off in narrow strips. The leaves are of two types; sharp, spreading needle-like juvenile leaves 510 cm long, and tightly adpressed scale-like adult leaves 24 mm long; they are arranged in opposite decussate pairs or occasionally whorls of three. The juvenile leaves are found on young plants up to 3 years old, and as scattered shoots on adult trees, usually in shade. The seed cones are 37 mm long, berry-like, dark purple-blue with a white wax cover giving an overall sky-blue colour (though the wax often rubs off); they contain one to three (rarely up to four) seeds, and are mature in 68 months from pollination. The juniper berry is an important winter food for many birds, which disperse the wingless seeds. The pollen cones are 23 mm long and 1.5 mm broad, shedding pollen in late winter or early spring. The trees are usually dioecious, with pollen and seed cones on separate trees.   Japanese cedar is a tall, cone shaped evergreen with bluish green foliage and a massive trunk with thick reddish brown bark that shreds and peels in long strips. This is a fast growing tree that, in its native habitat, can get more than 180 feet tall with a trunk diameter exceeding 12 feet. Ornamental specimens are rarely more than 60 feet tall. The branches are arranged in horizontal tiers, ascending at first, then drooping near their ends. The flattened, wedge-shaped leaves are about 1/2 inch long and point forward, while their bases clasp the twigs. The leaves are overlapping and crowded in 5 ranks that spiral around and completely cloak the twigs. Male and female cones, 1 inch or less in length, are on the same tree. Two varieties are recognized: var. japonica has a dense habit and thick, spreading branches; var. sinensis has a looser habit and slender, drooping branches. A fantastic bonsai specimen. Every house is built with its own angles, but only this house has the Right Angle.    Built of reclaimed clear cedar, the wood on the body of the house has been selected to grow in intensity toward the outside corner. It is finished with teak oil to bring out the natural color spectrum of the wood. The roof and side are also reclaimed clear cedar and finished with a quality light green low-VOC solid color stain.    The roof and side overhang the main body of the house by 3cm, providing the entrance hole protection from the elements.   Smaller birds prefer the depth this abode provides below the entrance hole. It allows enough space for them to build their nest out of the reach of any cold-hearted predators. The lack of a perch also prevents sneak attacks by beasts of prey.   Once per season the birdhouse should be cleaned out to make room for the next house guest. To simplify cleaning, the back panel pivots open on concealed hinges by removing a pin from the side. No tools required and clean up is a breeze.   To hang the birdhouse, simply attach the provided philips head screws to a desired location (tree, house, pole, etc.) and hang the birdhouse by the holes in the back panel.   Dimensions at largest points: 19cm wide X 19cm deep X 19cm tall, entrance hole is 3cm wide.
