For the first time, all five major writings of Pope Francis--his encyclicals, bulls, and apostolic exhortationsare gathered into one volume. Pope Francis--the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church--was elected on March 13, 2013. Since then, he has been the most influential religious leader in the world, drawing praise and admiration from people of all faiths. The impact of his writings has been felt not just in the Catholic Church for which they were intended but throughout the world. Each of the five works collected in The Complete Encyclicals, Bulls, and Apostolic Exhortations is a book unto itself, so this volume is one that can be cherished, read, and reread by all Catholics and devotees of Pope Francis for many years to come. Volume 1 includes: Lumen Fidei, June 29, 2013: The Light of Faith is an encyclical on the centrality of faith, the relationship between reason and faith, the Church's role in the transmission of faith, and how faith results in redeeming the world. Evangelii Gaudium, Nov. 24, 2013: The apostolic exhortation The Joy of the Gospel has been called Pope Francis's manifesto. It challenges all Christians to approach evangelization anew and overcome complacency in order to fulfill Christ's great mission. Misericordiae Vultus, April 11, 2015: In The Face of Mercy, the papal bull for the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy in 2015, the pope urges Catholics, "We need constantly to contemplate the mystery of mercy." Laudato Si', May 24, 2015: Praise Be to You: On Care for Our Common Home is the landmark encyclical in which Pope Francis issued a call to the entire Church--and the world--on climate change, human responsibility, the role of faith in how we live among God's entire creation, and the future of the planet. Amoris laetitia, March 19, 2016: Love in the Family is an exhortation published after the Synods on the Family. In it, Pope Francis ranges in his quotations and examples from St. Thomas Aquinas and Martin Luther King Jr. to the film Babette's Feast. Review Pope Francis is a revolutionary. The revolution he proposes, however, is not a matter of economic or political prescription, but a revolution in the self-understanding of the Catholic Church: a re-energizing return to the pentecostal fervor and evangelical passion from which the church was born two millennia ago, and a summons to mission that accelerates the great historical transition from institutional-maintenance Catholicism to the Church of the New Evangelization. George Weigel Pope Francis s groundbreaking new documentAmoris Laetitia(The Joy of Love)asks the Church to meet people where they are, to consider the complexities of people s lives, and to respect people s consciences when it comes to moral decisions. The apostolic exhortation is mainly a document that reflects on family life and encourages families. But it is also the pope s reminder that the Church should avoid simply judging people and imposing rules on them without considering their struggles. Rev. James Martin, S.J. Laudato Si'is an earthquake.... (It) seems destined to go down as a major turning point, the moment when environmentalism claimed pride of place on par with the dignity of human life and economic justice as a cornerstone of Catholic social teaching. It also immediately makes the Catholic Church arguably the leading moral voice in the press to combat global warming and the consequences of climate change." John L. This is an original 470 year old hand coloured print from the first edition of Conrad Gessner's bird book published at Zurich by Christoffel Froschower in 1557. Gessner's bird book was part of a four volume set known as the Historiae Animalium or "Histories of Animals" appearing from 1551-1558. It was an encyclopedic work of an inventory of Renaissance zoology. Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. It is the first modern zoological work that attempts to describe all known animals, and the first bibliography of natural history writings. Historiae Animalium appeared in four volumes (quadrupeds, birds, fishes) from 1551-1558. Volume 1 was an illustrated work on live-bearing four-footed animals, Volume 2 on egg-laying quadrupeds, Volume three on birds and Volume four on fish and other aquatic animals. A condensed popular version translated into German and known as Gessner's Thierbuch or "animal book" was published in Zurich in 1563. Gessner was a protestant and his work was added to the Roman Catholic Church's list of prohibited books soon after publication. Pope Paul IV strongly believed that the religious convictions of an author contaminated all his writings. Though it is a large work Gessner sought to distinguish facts from myth, his encyclopedic work also included mythical creatures and imaginary beasts, intermixed with the strange newly discovered animals from the East Indies, those of the far north and animals brought back from the New World. Gessner made many of the illustrations for this work himself but acknowledges that he also sought the help of other artists, one being Lucas Schan from Strasbourg. The layout of the work is in the traditional style of the emblem book where images are accompanied by explanatory text and the names of animals are given in different languages. Gessner was ennobled in 1564 and in many later sources he is referred to as Conrad Von Gessner. He did not live long as a nobleman though as he died from the plague scarcely a year later. Patrons of the period had the option of purchasing either uncoloured copies for 2 Guilders or coloured copies for 3 Guilders. If the order was for a coloured copy the book was then sent to specialist shops for this purpose. This leaf is from an incomplete coloured copy. The leaf is in great condition for it's age with some light age yellowing on the margins, two marginal worm holes and some slight colour show through on the verso.

2007 first edition paperback with 159 pages brand new. R50 postage in SA. Koans--such as "What is the sound of one hand clapping?"--have penetrated deeply into popular consciousness. Yet, those who encounter koans in the traditional literature or in the context of exploring Zen practice themselves can often find them utterly baffling. The Flowing Bridge is the first-ever book to address all of the first koans that Zen students encounter in practice--"What is Mu?" "What is the sound of the single hand?" and the so-called "miscellaneous" koans--that have historically been closely guarded by master and disciple as esoteric treasures. Elaine MacIness, a Catholic nun and a Zen teacher in the lineage of the renowned master Koun Yamada (author of Wisdom's The Gateless Gate), offers exceptionally valuable guidance to beginners on how to work with koans-and reveals an uncommon depth of insight and an easy technical mastery of Zen's most misunderstood and most powerful tools. This book is sure to become a classic, standing alongside The Gateless Gate and The Blue Cliff Record as a must-read for anyone seeking Zen's subtlest teachings and deepest power.

1999 / Hardcover / Good condition The sequel to Frank McCourt's memoir of his Irish Catholic boyhood, Angela's Ashes, picks up the story in October 1949, upon his arrival in America. Though he was born in New York, the family had returned to Ireland due to poor prospects in the United States. Now back on American soil, this awkward 19-year-old, with his "pimply face, sore eyes, and bad teeth," has little in common with the healthy, self-assured college students he sees on the subway and dreams of joining in the classroom. Initially, his American experience is as harrowing as his impoverished youth in Ireland, including two of the grimmest Christmases ever described in literature. McCourt views the U.S. through the same sharp eye and with the same dark humor that distinguished his first memoir: race prejudice, casual cruelty, and dead-end jobs weigh on his spirits as he searches for a way out. A glimpse of hope comes from the army, where he acquires some white-collar skills, and from New York University, which admits him without a high school diploma. But the journey toward his position teaching creative writing at Stuyvesant High School is neither quick nor easy. Fortunately, McCourt's openness to every variety of human emotion and longing remains exceptional; even the most damaged, difficult people he encounters are richly rendered individuals with whom the reader can't help but feel uncomfortable kinship. The magical prose, with its singing Irish cadences, brings grandeur and beauty to the most sorrowful events, including the final scene, set in a Limerick graveyard. --Wendy Smith

1993. H ard cover with dust cover. 308 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. They hid wherever they could for as long as it took the Allies to win the war -- Jewish children, frightened, alone, often separated from their families. For months, even years, they faced the constant danger of discovery, fabricating new identities at a young age, sacrificing their childhoods to save their lives. These secret survivors have suppressed these painful memories for decades. Now, in The Hidden Children, twenty-three adult survivors share their moving wartime experiences -- some for the first time. There is Rosa, who hid in an impoverished one-room farmhouse with three others, sleeping on a clay pallet behind a stove; Renee, who posed as a Catholic and was kept in a convent by nuns who knew her secret; and Richard, who lived in a closet with his family for thirteen months. Their personal stories of belief and determination give a voice, at last, to the forgotten. Inspiring and life-affirming, The Hidden Children is an unparalleled document of witness, discovery, and the miracle of human courage.

It was 1971 when Hard Rock first opened its doors in London, and Rita was there with her spunky, chatty, and absolutely lovable personality. Over the forty-five years she served at Hard Rock, Rita has collected quite some stories to tell, including her relationship with rock `n' roll celebrities, Hard Rock's history, and her own personal life struggles. In this book Rita tells her story from being a shy Catholic schoolgirl in Galway to becoming the best known waitress and later ambassador of one of history's most iconic American style restaurants. She also narrates how she met Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and many other famous celebrities during her time at the Hard Rock. Written with candid humour and disarming honesty, Rita serves up a brilliantly crafted story about how the Hard Rock, like herself, defied all the odds to become a global phenomenon. It is remarkable that a technically-minded Roman Catholic RAF fighter pilot, who studied physics at Scotland's oldest university and became a physical education teacher after the war, should find himself in close contact with a traditional witchcraft coven as early as 1942. This was outrageous and dangerous. The Witchcraft Act was not repealed until almost ten years later and the Old Religion, the pre-Christian religion of North-West Europe, was still banned. Yet, Bill Love (that's his real name) remained firmly attached to the concept of living in harmony with nature, and in 1953, he asked to join such a coven. The High Priestess, who initiated him, had herself been drawn into The Craft during the 1920s and often told stories of older members with memories going back to the end of the 19th century. So, Love's story has ancient roots with passed-on memories from a time when everything connected to this way of life was very much against the law. Love learned to live in harmony with nature from the experience of doing what these elders taught him and, in addition to this, during the 1950s, he met many of the famous people who first brought this innate way of life to the public's attention. This provided him with unique opportunities of following roots into spheres, which many modern practitioners of Wicca can only dream about. Format:Hardback Pages:0
