View From City Hall - Reflections On Governing Cape Town (Paperback) Patricia De Lille, Craig Kesson   The City of Cape Town is a place of contrasts, the legacy of apartheid having left a distinct make-up. Yet the challenges confronting the contemporary city are notably aggravated by modern-day factors such as increasing unemployment and poverty.   In this timely work, Mayor of Cape Town Patricia de Lille and Craig Kesson, the city’s Director of Policy and Strategy, confront some of the issues of governance: how can the city help overcome social and physical segregation; how can the government live up to the promises made to South Africans; and how can the city function and heal within these limitations? "I’ve seen firsthand the progress Cape Town has made under Mayor De Lille. Successes in one city often spreads to others, and this book provides a valuable guide for how, with a bit of motivated and dynamic leadership, cities can lead the way on the most important issues of our day.” Michael Bloomberg, founder of Bloomberg L.P. and former mayor of New York City   Imprint: Jonathan Ball Publishers Country of origin: South Africa Release date: September 2017 Authors: Patricia De Lille • Craig Kesson Dimensions: 233 x 152 x 18mm (L x W x T) Format: Paperback - Trade Pages: 256 ISBN-13: 978-1-86842-786-4

2007 paperback with 434 pages in good condition. R50 postage in SA. Inscribed and signed on front page by Pinard.                                                                                                                                                          A narrative that has its roots in the dark Middle Ages of Europe, and the brutal Roman Catholic inquisitions! Will history repeat itself? A saga of the persecuted French Huguenots, Jacques Pinard and his wife, Hester, who find refuge at the Cape of Good Hope in 1688. Almost 300 years later, a distant relative and son of Africa, Rueben Pinard, stumbles upon his French Huguenot heritage. His subsequent supernatural awakening to the faith of his forefathers and his prophetic calling. A vision, beginning with the powerful prophetic utterance: "You must go to the land of your ancestors!" An end-time scenario. A mysterious Jewish remnant. History repeats itself - a place of refuge. The Holy See, Opus Dei - a Personal Prelature. Apollyon/Abaddon - the 'Beast' of the last days - the man of sin. Global persecution of Christians. Implementation of Satan's seal of ownership - the infamous 666! The Great Tribulation. Battle of Jerusalem. The Return of the Son of Man with power and might! Thy Kingdom Come! Jesus' 1000 year reign from Jerusalem. Although the theme of this book is classified as fiction, a portion of the content is semi-autobiographical. The balance is premised upon certain Biblical, historical and contemporary facts. The backdrop being the last book in the Bible: the book of Revelation. Through the medium of faction (fact and fiction), the author weaves a realistic and exciting end-time drama around the book of Revelation. His purpose is to encourage everyone, everywhere, to read the last book of the Bible. The book of Revelation is the 'roadmap' of prophecy for these the last days! The author, together with his wife lives in Franschhoek (French Corner), South Africa, where theyadminister an end-time prophetic Internet ministry. They are committed Christians and are respectively 8th generation French Huguenot and Dutch religious refugee descendants. Because of this they have a rich Christian heritage. Therefore, the blood of the martyrs runs 'thickly' through their veins.

John Mackenzie South African Missionary and Statesman - W. Douglas - Negro University Press - 1969 - 564pp, Hard cover in very good, clean and tight condition. One of the most influential missionaries in South Africa. Brought up in a devout Church of Scotland family in northeastern Scotland, he volunteered for service with the LMS in 1855 and in 1858 was sent to South Africa. He served at Kuruman and at Shoshong among the Tswana peoples. Returning from furlough in 1871, he became tutor in the school for teachers and evangelists, first at Shoshong then at Kuruman. The Tswana peoples were threatened with the loss of their land to Afrikaners of the Transvaal or to speculators from the Cape. Mackenzie became a firm advocate of direct imperial rule of native territories to prevent settler takeover of the land so essential to the integrity of an African people. After a very long and complex struggle against the forces of both the Transvalers and of Cape politicians like Cecil Rhodes, he achieved success when in 1885 the British government declared the present Botswana a British Protectorate and preserved it from white settler occupation. In 1890 Mackenzie left the Tswana and spent his last years as pastor to the Cape Coloured people of Hankey, the last resting place of John Philip.

Logan's Way The Life and Times of J.D. Logan...a Matjiesfontein Chronicle - Robert N. Toms - 2010 - Paperback in very good -  condition. "In 1884, young immigrant Scot, James Logan, purchased land at "a place called Matjesfontein", an insignificant railway halt in the depths of the Karoo. The Cape Government Railways had, by then, reached the Kimberley diamond fields, and - following Cecil Rhodes' vision of the "road to the North", his dream of a Cape to Cairo line - was extending into the Zambezi hinterland. Logan, whose meteoric rise was based on an energetic and meticulous efficiency, had been awarded the government catering contract at Touws River, which lies within the vast spaces of the Karoo."

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 10 working days Impossible Mourning argues that while the HIV/AIDS epidemic has occupied an important place in public discourse in South Africa over the last ten years, particularly in debates about governance and constitutional rights post-apartheid, the experiences of people living with HIV for the most part remain invisible and the multiple losses due to AIDS have gone publicly unmourned. This profound fact is at the centre of this book which explores the significance of the disavowal of AIDS-death in relation to violence, death, and mourning under apartheid. Impossible Mourning shows how, in spite of the magnitude of the epidemic, and as a result of the stigma and discrimination that have largely characterized both national and personal responses to the epidemic, spaces for the expression of collective mourning have been few. This book engages with multiple forms of visual representation that work variously to compound, undo, and complicate the politics of loss. Drawing on work the author did in art and narrative support groups while working with people living with HIV/AIDS in Khayelitsha outside Cape Town, this book also includes analyses of the work of South African visual artists and photographers Jane Alexander, Gille de Vlieg, Jillian Edelstein, Pieter Hugo, Ezrom Legae, Gideon Mendel, Zanele Muholi, Sam Nhlengethwa, Paul Stopforth, and Diane Victor. As a childhood friend of Chris Hani and inspired by the thinking of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, he became a political activist in the liberation struggle against apartheid. Preceding Nelson Mandela to Robben Island, he was in fact one of the prisoners responsible for building Mandiba's prison cell. Once released from ‘the island' he became a champion of the poor and oppressed - speaking out against segregation, fighting for the rights of HIV positive people, and acknowledging the equal role of women in society. On becoming Archbishop of Cape Town he succeeded Desmond Tutu, and was responsible for continuing implementation of change within the Church. During his eleven years residence in Bishopscourt, Archbishop Njongo, as he was affectionately known, was a bridge-builder linking divergent views and a catalyst for change.
