Morella quercifolia Seeds Morella quercifolia commonly known as Oak-leaved Myrica or Waxberry Bush in English and Maagpynbossie in Afrikaans is a South African endemic species from the Eastern Cape, Northern Cape, North West and Western Cape Provinces. Morella quercifolia grows into an evergreen shrub with very unusual leaves. The species name quercifolia means oak-leaved, and it grows leaves of different shapes somehow reminiscent of oaks. Morella quercifolia was formerly called Myrica quercifolia. It is grown as a garden ornamental in mixed borders or as a potted container plant. It grows up to 1 m tall but it spreads horizontally so it is very useful in the landscapes. It takes any conditions, drought, sun, shade and moderate frosts. The plant is dioecious, so you need a male and a female to set seeds. Leaves and fruits are waxy but actually the substance is not wax - it is an unusual type of fat that looks like wax. The leaves of Morella quercifolia are used in an old Cape remedy for the relief of stomachache. The bid amount is for 1 Seed Growing Instructions will be sent to your email.

Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape)
Dietes grandiflora Seeds Common Names: Large Wild Iris, Fairy Iris This well known indigenous large wild iris is commonly grown in gardens and used in large landscapes throughout the country. It is a perennial, evergreen plant which grows up to 1.5m in large clumps. It grows naturally along the eastern coastal areas of the southern Cape, Eastern Cape and southern Kwazulu-Natal where it may be found in full sun or partial shade at forest margins, or in the shelter of taller shrubs on exposed slopes facing the sea. The name Dietes means "having two relatives" and refers to the relationship between this genus and Moraea and Iris. Grandiflora means "large flower". Dietes grandiflora plants grow from underground rhizomes. The long, rigid, sword-shaped leaves are held in a fan shape. The leaves are dark green and may reach up to 1m long and mm wide. The attractive flowers are large (about 100mm across) and are white with yellow nectar guides and outer tepals and violet central segments. The flowers are held on erect, slender stems which are about 1m in length. The flowers are borne in mass at certain periods - often after rain in summer. The individual flowers do not last more than a couple of days (so are of no use in a vase) however, the plant bears so many flowers during the peak period that the plant looks most striking. The flowers attract lots of bees and other pollinators. This plant is occasionally called the "Fairy Iris" because the fragile white petals not only look like fairy wings, but also have a tendency to disappear mysteriously overnight! The bid amount is for 1 Seed We'll supply you with all the germination & care instructions.

The really exciting thing about this original work is that it was used by the artist Joy Collier to illustrate the front cover of her first book which was on Stellenbosch, and which was published in . On the back is an original typed note by Joy Collier (see above). She writes as follows: "My drawing is now Africana since it was made in before the restoration of the Burgher House, on the right, and the destruction of the house between it and the Kruithuis". The work is a drawing in artist's pen with watercolour highlights. Mixed media. Picture is 27 cm x 11.5 cm. Original frame is 41cm x 29cm. After giving the matter a lot of thought, I believe that the drawing was sketched in but then signed and dated in preparation for the book. This original drawing was used as the basis for the cover illustration of the book, which was published in . The book is not included in this sale. The second hand signature at the bottom was dated , which was when the artist applied watercolour wash paint using the colours white green blue and brown, and probably sold the final original mixed media work with the typed note now found on the back.
