Africa through the Mist of Time - Brenda Sullivan - 2001 - Paperback in good, clean and tight condition. Sullivan is not afraid to look outside the thinking that attributes all rock engravings to the Bushmen. She investigates the existence of "The Strange Ones" based on the fact that the Bushmen married outside their clans and thus wandered the entire sub-Saharan Africa, mixing bloodlines, culture and traditions as they roamed. Controversial, but intriguing.

2001 first edition with 237 pages in good condition. R46 postage in SA. Who were "The Strange Ones"? In this fascinating study of heritage, Brenda Sullivan expands on her investigation of a "pre-San" race from her first book, "Spirit of the Rocks." She dismisses the theory that all rock art is the work of the Bushmen, based on her research that the San married outside their clans and thus roamed throughout sub-Saharan Africa for millennia. The San refer to rock engravings as the work of their ancestors. Brenda Sullivan launches into a compelling study of the San bloodlines based on evidence of their wanderings and the knowledge that Africa was circumnavigated for the second time as early as 470 BCE at the request of the Carthaginian king, Xerxes. She emphasizes the preservation of South African rock engravings. "In South Africa the emphasis on fertility, as evinced by the engraved symbols and figures recognizable as such by traditional healers and diviners, and the lack of rock engravings depicting scenes of violence or brutality, should awaken in a reader's mind the urgency of a universal need to respect Earth, our Mother - and to restore to harmony the things of this Earth, this Eden," says Sullivan

1963 / Hardcover / Good condition he timely introduction to the basic tribal cultures of Africa permits Western students a glimpse of this vast and intriguing continent. The author, curator of American Ethnology at the American Museum of Natural History in New York, has lived among these tribes and his writing reflects this firsthand knowledge. Beginning with the hunters,- the Bushmen of the Kalahari Desert and the BaMbuti Pygmies of the rain forests in the Congo this describes customs and beliefs, cultural variations and economic structure. The next general group under surveillance is composed of the herdsmen- the Shilluk, Nuer, Masai and Watusi tribes whose livelihood depends on the cattle they raise. The farmers, members of more intricate societies -- the Kikuyu of Kenya, the Ashanti of Ghana -- live more complicated lives. Wherever possible, historical derivations are highlighted and specific anecdotes recounted. Richard Powers has illustrated this informative introduction to Africa, and for many students, to the whole subject of cultural anthropology.

(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) Dawid Kruiper was an old Bushman with a secret that had been kept in his family for over a century, and which he wanted to hand on to his sons before he died. But he didn't have the means to take his children back to the place where his grandfather had witnessed the horror that silenced him. So Dawid asked Patricia Glyn to help him mount the great - and final - odyssey of his life. For two months in 2011, three generations of the Kruiper family, Patricia and her expedition crew travelled through the Kalahari, visiting and documenting places where Dawid and his forebears had roamed when they were 'wild' and free in the decades before the outsiders arrived in their homeland. And their journey culminated in Dawid releasing his secret to the world. This is the story of how Patricia's assumptions about and relationships with the Kruiper family were tested to the limit before they trusted her with their knowledge and stories. Patricia slowly gains an understanding of the depth of the Kruipers' pain after centuries of genocide, prejudice and dispossession. The result is a candid but compassionate account of how this historical trauma manifests in the everyday lives of a contemporary Bushman family. Patricia describes what she learned from the family about humankind's original relationship with wilderness and the natural world. She recounts the Kruipers' extraordinary veld knowledge and intuition, their inbuilt GPS and prescience. This is an eco-adventure with a difference. What Dawid Knew explores the personal history and heritage of a remarkable family and what the Bushmen have to teach us about respect for, and responsible management of, our natural resources. Format:Paperback (Trade paperback, B format) Pages:248
