Bush Of Ghosts: Life And War In Namibia 1986-90 (John Liebenberg & Patricia Hayes) Unique images by veteran photographer Liebenberg are included, taken in stealth where cameras were outlawed, and because he managed to get to both sides of the conflict. The book traces the marks left by war on individuals on both sides, as much as on the region that was the theatre of operations on its landscape, its cultural and its political life. It follows the conflict through to the aftermath: the arrival of the United Nations transitional authority and the advent of democracy in Namibia, showing many of the fault lines exposed in the process. The photographs, mostly in black and white, in large format, speak eloquently for themselves, with captions reduced to the minimum. No blame is apportioned in this, southwestern Africa's Vietnam. With historically contextualizing introduction by historian Hayes. Softcover, 272 pages. Published 2011.

'Beating about the Bush' is the eagerly awaited follow-up to 'Barefoot Over The Serengeti', the tale of a young boy's life with the Masai, on the predator-rich plains of, what is now, the most famous game park on Earth. This book charts the life of David Read from the period   of to in the colony of Tanganyika (modern day Tanzania), as he comes to grips with his first schooling, his move to the Lupa Goldfields and the onset of adult life. Caught up in the War he marches his regiment of Masai and Samburu warriors from Eritrea to Kenya before leading them via Madagascar to the jungles of India and Burma. After demobilisation he becomes a vetinary officer, and it is here that his childhood experience comes into its own, as he roams the African bush, gazetting East Africa's game parks, investigating ritual tribal murder and learning about the reclusive hunter-gatherer Ndorobo people.

The Rhodesian Bush War Diary of John Coey, KIA 19 July 1975 It is Saturday afternoon, 19 July 1975, next to a dry riverbed in Rhodesias north-eastern operational area, in a war against communist-backed guerrillas. A Rhodesian combat medic receives an order to descend into the riverbed to attend to two critically wounded troopers, their figures seemingly lifeless on the sand. The whereabouts of the insurgents is not known. As the medic, displaying a red cross, moves in, shots ring out and he sustains a fatal head wound. That medic is 24-year-old American John Alan Coey.  Driven by his Christian faith and an ardent belief in the threat of global communist hegemony, Coey had come to Rhodesia to fulfil an overriding passion to help the beleaguered southern African country in its fight against what he perceived to be a communist bid to secure the sub-continent. John was a very complex individual who, right until his death, was in a permanent state of internal conflict as to his mission in life: he wishes he had a wife; he tells young American girls that they must produce strong sons who will fight the good fight; he is disillusioned by his failures; he admits he is a weak leader, virtually offering an apology for his own shortcomings; he vacillates endlessly; he admits to being unable to identify the path he needs to take to achieve his mission.  But, finally, as a combat medica pioneer in this concepthe finds his much sought-after destiny. Paperback, 200 pages

As a young Patrol Officer, Tony Tretowan was to experience rural life in remote stations in the bush of Matabeleland. He embraced the experience and learned Sindebele within a few months. The book is richly interspersed with anecdotes of wild frontier life - of rowdy prospectors, obstreperous farmers, maverick hunters and bizarre eccentrics. He deals with a wide array of crimes and incidents - from murder, tribal suicide, sorcery, robbery and drunkenness to horrific vehicle accidents. But as the bush war intensifies, Tony finds himself more and more involved in paramilitary operations. Ground Coverage was a BSAP intelligence-gathering unit - operating literally 'on the ground' in the rural areas. Known by his enemy, Nkomo's ZIPRA guerrillas, as Baleka, or 'he who runs hither and thither' because of his propensity for rapidly covering vast areas, alone in his beaten-up police Land Rover, the second part of the book deals with the author's conversion from civilian policeman to full-blooded counter-insurgency operator in an African guerrilla war. Told with a sensitivity and pathos that is rare in military memoirs, Delta Scout is a brutally honest, compelling account of innocence lost. Paperback, 304 pages Published June 2012
