Although the plan ultimately never came to fruition, a few sets of the Germans' detailed strategy documents are housed in the rare book rooms of libraries across Europe. But now the Bodleian Library has made documents from their set available for all to peruse in this unprecedented collection of the invasion planning materials. The planned operation would have involved landing 160,000 German soldiers along a forty-mile stretch of coast in southeast England. Packets of reconnaissance materials were put together for the invading forces, and the most intriguing parts are now reproduced here. Each soldier was to be given maps and geographical descriptions of the British Isles that broke down the country by regions, aerial photographs pinpointing strategic targets, an extensive listing of British roads and rivers, strategic plans for launching attacks on each region, an English dictionary and phrase book, and even a brief description of Britain's social composition. Augmenting the fascinating documents is an informative introduction that sets the materials in their historical and political context. A must-have for every military history buff, "German Invasion Plans for the British Isles, 1940" is a remarkable revelation of the inner workings of Hitler's most famous unrealized military campaign. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Ian Robertson joined the BBC during the golden age of radio broadcasting and was given a crash course in the art of sports commentary from some of the greatest names ever to sit behind a microphone: Cliff Morgan and Peter Bromley, Bryon Butler and John Arlott. Almost half a century after being introduced to the rugby airwaves by his inspiring mentor Bill McLaren, the former Scotland fly-half looks back on the most eventful of careers, during which he covered nine British and Irish Lions tours and eight World Cups, including the 2003 tournament that saw England life the Webb Ellis Trophy and "Robbo" pick up awards for his spine-tingling description of Jonny Wilkinson's decisive drop goal. He reflects on his playing days, his role in guiding Cambridge University to a long spell of Varsity Match supremacy and his relationships with some of the union code's most celebrated figures, including Sir Clive Woodward and Jonah Lomu. He also writes vividly and hilariously of his experiences as a horse racing enthusiast, his meetings with some of the world's legendary golfers and his dealings with a stellar cast of sporting outsiders, from Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor to Nelson Mandela. It is a hugely entertaining story that begins in a bygone rugby age, yet has much to say about the game in the here and now. It is this latter part of the `Iron Road to the Isles' that forms the major part of this book, hailed as one of the most scenic railway routes in the British Isles. Steam trains returned to the Mallaig line in 1984, eventually becoming the celebrated `Jacobite' service. Now an integral and indispensible part of the Scottish tourist scene, the trains run from Easter to Christmas and the New Year, twice daily during the peak season. In this superbly illustrated portrait of the line, 35 of the UK's top railway photographers have contributed pictures to create a quite stunning pictorial record. The great variety of photographic styles, using the route's many glorious vantage points, provides a mesmerising mix of unforgettable images, not just of the steam trains themselves but also the majestic Scottish landscape through which they run. South Africa
(This title is available on demand: expected date of dispatch will be 4-7 working days once ordered) South Africa¿s rugby legends celebrates those players who have become truly immortal in the eyes of their fans ¿ the greatest South African rugby players of the amateur years. This beautifully illustrated book covers the immense achievements of those players ¿ not necessarily all of them Springboks ¿ who ran out against the mighty All Blacks, the cunning Aussies and the wily English, among others, and played their way into rugby folklore. These are the best of the best. From Fairy Heatlie, who played for South Africa against the British in 1891, to the genius Danie Craven in the 1930s, the inspirational Hennie Muller of the 1940s and 50s, and the charismatic Morne du Plessis of the 1980s, the author explores in fascinating detail what made these men the unforgettable names they are today. Beautifully illustrated from the author¿s personal collection of archival rugby photos, some of which have never been seen before, this is the book every true rugby fan will want for his or her collection of rugby memorabilia. South Africa
Slight repair to base of spine, otherwise conditiion: very good. The early 1970s in South Africa were a time of economic boom, political repression, growing isolation and an unshakeable confidence that the Springboks were the best rugby team in the world – until the infamous 1974 British Lions tour.   It was a tour in which a group of talented and long-haired rugby players from the British Isles played, sang and drank their way across the country, beating the Springboks 3-0 in the four Tests, with the last one a dubious draw. Until then the Lions hadn’t beaten South Africa at home in 78 years.   Based on original research and interviews with players on both sides, When the Lions Came to Town vividly recreates a tumultuous rugby tour that sent shockwaves through South Africa. It captures a bygone era, a time before television, a golden age of amateurism, pranks and setting hotel rooms alight – as the Lions did after winning the series in PE.   Insightful, provocative and frequently amusing, When the Lions Came to Town casts a fresh eye on a divisive but undeniably colourful period in South African political, social and sporting history.
