BLACK & WHITE PHOTOGRAPH William Henry Ogilvie Poet Will H. Ogilvie was a Scottish-Australian narrative poet and horseman, jackaroo, and drover, and described as a quiet-spoken handsome Scot of medium height, with a fair moustache and red complexion. Born = 21 August 1869, Kelso, United Kingdom. Died = 30 January 1963, Ashkirk, United Kingdom. Nationality = British. Will H. Ogilvie achieved great popularity in both Scotland and Australia, where in his youth he worked as a stockman and rough-rider in the outback, and where he is given national status as a balladeer of the bush. His work ranges from hymns of praise to his homeland in the Scottish Borders, and narratives on Borders history and legend, to sporting verse (he is the master poet of the horse) and witty lines contributed to Punch. Will Ogilvie’s ashes were scattered on the road to Roberton, – the site of one of his most famous poems – and a memorial was erected in 1993.   Sold as seen in the images. WW2 Period E.R.WATTS AND SONS, OPTICAL LEVEL / ALIDADE  -- Military Surveying Instrument Made in Brass and painted Black -- WAR FINISH as marked on the level E.R.Watts and Sons, Optical Level / Alidade, No. 21037.  Used for plan and map making, usually in conjunction with a plane table. (Sometimes known as a Plane Table Level.)  Made of brass and painted black (War Finish).  The focusing telescope is in good condition giving a clear inverted image onto a crosshair graticule.  The silvered elevation scale is read using a vernier, with the help of a magnifying glass. (Silvered scale is clean,clear and easy to read.)  There are three bubble levels and one  Compass indicator  which all appear to be working perfectly. and one Compass indicator. All brass knobs and wheels using to set the instrument are working.   Please see the Photo's as part of the description. This volume was in the library of Lord Rosebury whilst he was Prime Minister of Great Britain. Rosebery was a pivotal figure in the formation of the IBEA Co and a firm supporter. Indeed, without his input it is doubtful the company would have become manifest upon the ground in East Africa. A good copy of the first edition of a very scarce title of only two editions (also ). An ambitious and short lived project, the IBEA Co kick started European government, trade and settlement in Kenya. The IBEA Co was wound up in and the administration assumed by Imperial government. A good copy of the first edition of a very scarce title of only two editions (also ). Unique in having been within the library of so pivotal and important a personage as Lord Rosebery. It was later within another library, the labels and marks of which have been sadly (and badly) removed leaving the ghost of the impression of a hand stamp and m/s entries inside the front fly.
