With the signing of the Armistice in 1918 came the end of another era in Army life. The horse, so long the mainstay of transport in the Army, was being replaced by the lorry and the RASC was in the forefront of the development of mechanical transport, with all its attendant challenges of training, manpower and maintenance. The development of wheeled vehicles capable of moving off roads, with the introduction of multi-axle drive and pneumatic tyres, were to restore mobility to the battlefield. The widespread use of motor transport led to the prime importance of the provision and handling of supplies of fuel, and influenced the strategic importance of the oilfields. Thus, as an Army could no longer fight, or even exist, without supplies and transport, the activities of the RASC, which provided both, is a history of the activities of the Army as a whole. Despite shortages of equipment and manpower, by the time of crisis in 1938 and 1939, the training of the Army's Transport and Supply service for its role in World War Two was both realistic and imaginative. This account gives a fascinating new insight into the personalities and events which made this possible.

As a reserve unit, it has a status roughly equivalent to that of a British Army Reserve unit or United States Army National Guard unit. Origin. The history of this Regiment dates back to the Transvaal Cycle Corps, which was formed in Johannesburg on 1 October 1905 from the Bicycle Section of the Transvaal Scottish Regiment. A small section of this unit subsequently took part in the suppression of the Bambata Rebellion in Zululand. After its return from this conflict the unit recognised the possibilities of mechanisation and members of the Regiment manufactured three armoured cars, creating a motorised fighting unit. This led to the renaming of the unit in 1909 to the Transvaal Cycle and Motor Corps. On 1 July 1913 the Regiment was renamed the 11th Infantry (Rand Light Infantry) and transferred to the Active Citizen Force of the Union Defence Force. Simultaneously, the unit was converted to a normal infantry regiment. The Regiment's Pretoria detachment was transferred to the 12th Infantry (Pretoria Regiment). World War One. During World War I the Regiment took part in the South-West Africa, suffering light casualties – only two dead and eleven wounded. In 1932 the Regiment was renamed the Rand Light Infantry. World War Two The RLI was mobilized for World War II in June 1940 and gained fame in North Africa where it took part in many front line engagements and earned battle honours at Bardia, Gazala and El Alamein. (See 1st SA Infantry Division) After the defeat of Rommel’s Afrika Korps, the RLI returned to South Africa and was merged with the Duke of Edinburgh’s Own Rifles.  2000 Soft Cover 279pp Very Good. Appears unread, spine not creased, some minor shelf wear, some foxing to end pages ends a bit marked but contents clean and tight. In 1938 Arthur Titherington lied about his age so he could join the army at 17 and finally get to see the world. He was taken prisoner in 1942 when the British surrendered Singapore to the Japanese. From there he was marched to the slave labour camp of Kinkaseki, now part of Taiwan, where he worked in a copper mine for three years. Beatings and a near-starvation diet took their toll and when he was finally liberated in 1945 he weighed just five-and-a-half stone, exactly half the weight he was when he joined the army as a motor cycle dispatch rider.

This all new work by accomplished military historian Alexandre Binda, former paymaster to the Greys Scouts, tables the remarkable story of Rhodesias mounted infantry, the Greys Scouts. Here, he has traced the Greys from their early origins in the Matabele Rebellion of 1896, where an unassuming Englishman, the Honourable George Grey, found himself originating a body of horseman named the Bulawayo Field Force, through to the formation of the Animal Transport Unit (ATU) which went on to become the Mounted Infantry Unit (MIU). With the skill of a practiced narrator, Binda takes the reader through these early days to the establishment of the Greys Scouts in the Rhodesian Army order of battle in 1976. Deployed to great effect during the bitter Rhodesian Bush War of the late 1960s 1970s, the mounted operations conducted by the Greys are succinctly and clearly detailed. Some of the contacts related make for astonishing reads and with the lively, vibrant, text one can almost feel the steaming sweat of rider and mount; sense the pounding adrenaline; hear the thundering hooves as a fearful enemy is pursued to battles inevitable conclusion. Suffice to say, The Equus Men makes for an engaging read. Trained and utilised as mounted infantry as opposed to cavalry, the Greys Scouts saw exceptional success in the field. Lightly equipped, they were able to cover great distances at speed, live off the veldt with minimal support and through shock action, quickly engage and destroy insurgent forces. Originally a regular formation, the Greys Scouts were augmented by Territorial and National Service soldiers as the conflict progressed and by 1980, when hostilities ceased, the Regiment numbered some 600 soldiers, both men and women, black and white. With its informative text and rich profusion of photographs, The Equus Men is a stunning tribute to the equestrian and fighting prowess of the Greys Scouts. It is a remarkable story and one that is ever more relevant, given recent mounted and pack horse operations conducted by British and US special forces in Afghanistan.
