2003. Hard cover with dust cover. 294 pages. Very good condition. Tightly bound, neat and clean. Under 1kg. Drawing on the archives of the National Army Museum, this book recreates the harsh reality of the Anglo-Zulu War - one of the most dramatic campaigns in British History. The Zulus were a fiercely independent and extremely brave warrior race. When the might of the British army was defeated by this indigenous foe at Isandlwana in 1879, it sent shock waves throughout the Empire - 1300 British troops and their African allies were killed. In the aftermath, Zulu reserves mounted a raid on a British border post at Rorke's Drift, which was held by just 145 men. After ten hours of ferocious fighting the Zulus were driven away. Eventually superior weaponry carried the day for the British, (though not before the exiled French prince, Louis Napoleon, was killed in skirmish). Invading Zululand, the British took the capital of Ulundi and 5000 British defeated 20,000 Zulus. King Cetewayo was captured and the war was over. Ian Knight draws on a host of previously unpublished letters and diaries, from ordinary soldiers to the British commander-in-chief, to bring this war to life - one which saw great acts of bravery an courage on both sides.

THE NATIONAL ARMY MUSEUM BOOK OF THE BOER WAR by Field Marshal Lord Carver Soft cover – 193x130 mm – Pan Books 2000 Edition 299 pages – index included – b/w photos – maps Near New cond – unread – no spine creasing – mild shelf wear “...in 2014 many countries in the world will seek to reflect upon the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War in 1914. In two respects at least, the Anglo-Boer War may be seen as a precursor to that more extensive conflict in that many of the Allied leaders in 1914 had gained their experience in the fighting in South Africa; while the preparedness of the British and the Imperial Armies in 1914 had been crucially influenced by the lessons learned in the Anglo-Boer War.”

Hardcover with laminated boards. Written by John Laband, published by University of Natal Press, 2001. 140 pages. Tracked postage is R60.00. The Later Zulu wars of the 1880s were a last-ditch resistance to colonialism combined with bitter civil war, and their consequences proved more devastating for the Zulu people than the famous Anglo-Zulu war of 1879.  They took place at a time of changing fighting methods and tactics for both the British and the Zulu - the last time the British Army went on campaign wearing scarlet was in Zululand in 1888. This book explains the nature of the diverse Zulu, British and Boer military forces fighting in Zululand, and the ways in which the British and the Boers fostered and exploited divisions among the Zulu people in order to maintain colonial control. The author's research (supported by detailed maps) traces the complex series of wars and battles in Zululand during the 1880s. He places the campaigns in their historical context and assesses their broader significance.

VINTAGE LIFE SAVING GUARDS BADGE The girl guard program has its roots in Scouting. While stationed in India, British Army officer Robert Baden-Powell realized his men lacked the ability to perform first aid procedures and the basic skills for survival in the wild. In turn, he wrote a small handbook to teach army men first aid, outdoor survival tactics and leadership. The book caught the attention of young English boys, so Robert began to explore the possibility of developing a training program geared toward this age group. This was the foundation for the birth of the Boy Scouts. In 1913 Robert Baden-Powell invited General William Booth to become a member of the governing body of world scouting. The general saw great potential in the program for The Salvation Army and out of it inaugurated the Life Saving Scout Movement. This step marked the beginning of a multi-faceted troop program for boys and girls in The Salvation Army. The first girl guard troop sprouted in London, England, in 1915 and was called the Life-Saving Girl Guards. It reflected the structure and tenor of the Life Saving Scouts program. Much of the training was similar, but other focuses such as homemaking skills were included. The original Life-Saving Girl Guard badge featured a lamp, representing guarding the soul; an eye, representing guarding the mind; crossed clubs, representing guarding the body; Bible representing the importance of God in their lives; and a patrol of girls, representing guarding others. The motto was “To save and to serve.” After the first girl guard troop was inaugurated in the United States by National Commander Evangeline Booth in 1916, the program spread across the nation.   It is interesting to note that the American badge never had the bottom section with "To save and to serve" on it. That was purely UK and Europe.

SAS Savage Wars of Peace - Anthony Kemp - 1994 - Paperback in good, clean and tight condition.  This work, the sequel to Anthony Kemp's definitive "The SAS at War", which dealt with the foundation of the Regiment by David Stirling and its role up to 1945, takes the story forward to the storming of the Iranian Embassy, the attack on the IRA in Gibraltar, and the under-cover Gulf War. Following the Second World War, the SAS became essentially a component of the British Army and took part in colonial campaigns, including those in Malaya, Borneo, South Arabia and Oman. Since 1969, though, elements of the Regiment have been stationed more or less permanently in an under-cover role in Northern Ireland. It was at about that time too that the Regiment became involved in counter terrorist activities elsewhere, including England itself. Since then a cloak of secrecy has descended over all SAS activities, including those in the Falklands and the Gulf War. Intense speculation has been the inevitable result. This book, based on interviews and on more co-operation than the SAS has granted any other writer, tells us the maximum compatible with security of a regiment which has become the most feared and respected of special forces anywhere in the world.

The concentration camps of the Anglo-Boer War caused thousands of deaths and much suffering. But should the women and children in the camps only be seen as victims, or is there another story to be told? The War at Home tries to do just that. Firstly, it explores the unique strength of Boer women, who were often more vehemently anti-British than the men, and their role in supporting the Boer guerrilla fighters. There is also a chapter on the extraordinary Nonnie de la Rey (wife of General Koos de la Rey) who lived in the veld with her six children for nearly two years to avoid capture. A chapter on everyday life in the camps again points out how some camps were run more effectively than others and how for many women the biggest challenge was keeping boredom at bay. In an effort to stay busy, many young Boer women for instance received valuable training as nurse's assistants. Another chapter on the clash of cultures between British doctors and Boer women explains why camp doctors started to blame the personal hygiene and mothering abilities of Boer women when they could not find ways to cure the dying children. The book also takes the suffering of black civilians in the black camps into account with a special focus on black children. As in the white camps, the majority of the 20 000 deaths in the black camps were children. Lastly, in the year in which the Women's Monument in Bloemfontein celebrates its centenary, The War at Home looks critically at the meaning of the monument then and now. Hardcover, 272 pages
