One of the most comprehensive accounts of the 1879 Anglo-Zulu War ever published, "Brave Men's Blood" is also the best illustrated. The result of years of research in Britain, South Africa, France, the USA and Australia, it includes 270 contemporary illustrations integrated with text providing a concise history of the Zulu state and the causes of the war. The illustrations of men in action, uniforms and weapons, brings to life the experiences of soldiers from both sides, and create a sense of life in the field and the drama of combat itself. Battles are depicted in contemporary sketches and engravings that present a unique record of the campaign.   

After Pearl Harbor, Japan swept unchecked through the Pacific. But a tiny band of brave men stayed behind the enemy lines. Aided by loyal islanders, they watched and they warned. They were the Coast Watchers. They saved countless lives - including that of future US President John F. Kennedy - and they changed the course of the Pacific War. They knew capture meant certain execution but, while the Japanese hunted them, they moved and hid in the jungle, taking their cumbersome teleradios with them (equipment that took more than a dozen men to transport). They warned of Japanese air strikes, reported on the movements of their shipping and troops, and saved scores of downed airmen. Their reports gave vital warning time to the Allies and allowed them to take a decisive toll on the enemy. The famed American admiral, William 'Bull' Halsey summed it up: 'Guadalcanal saved the Pacific, and the Coast Watchers saved Guadalcanal.'

The Zulus were a fiercely independent and extremely brave warrior race. When the might of the British army was defeated by this indigenous foe at Isandlwana in 1879, it sent shock waves throughout the Empire - 1300 British troops and their African allies were killed. In the aftermath, Zulu reserves mounted a raid on a British border post at Rorke's Drift, which was held by just 145 men. After ten hours of ferocious fighting the Zulus were driven away. Eventually superior weaponry carried the day for the British, (though not before the exiled French prince, Louis Napoleon, was killed in skirmish). Invading Zululand, the British took the capital of Ulundi and 5000 British defeated 20,000 Zulus. King Cetewayo was captured and the war was over. Ian Knight draws on a host of previously unpublished letters and diaries, from ordinary soldiers to the British commander-in-chief, to bring this war to life - one which saw great acts of bravery an courage on both sides.
