The past century has wrought a vast change in his appearance, vernacular, sobriety, diversions, and general behaviour. We can congratulate ourselves, however, that a better type has been evolved, although we can still recognise to-day modified (and improved) specimens of the men who were in residence in the early twenties." Books: The Cambridge Undergraduate 100 Years Ago. Compiled, with Extracts and Illustrations from Contemporary Sources by Oskar Teichman D.S.O., M.C., M.A.

About the product 1st English-language edition. 8vo; original orange cloth, lettered in black on spine; pictorial dustwrapper; pp. viii + 124 + (ii). Dustwrapper a little edgeworn, sunned on spine panel, with trace of foxing; earlier owner's name signed in pencil on front free endpaper; sporadic foxing. Good to very good condition."This work, mainly about the habits of and adventures with baboons, is a translation of articles written in Afrikaans by the late Eugène Nielen Marais (the author of The Soul of the White Ant). The articles appeared originally in Die Vaderland. Subsequently collected and arranged by Dr. M. S. B. Kritzinger, they were published in book form under the title Burgers van die Berge, by J. L. van Schaik Ltd., of Pretoria. These chapters in popular vein are but sparks from the anvil on which the author had been fashioning for years a more detailed and scientific work, The Soul of the Ape, the final manuscript of which has unfortunately been lost. A small portion of the first draft of The Soul of the Ape has, however, been included."

Condition: Very Good. Winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature Univ. of Nebraska Press, 2002 - Fiction - 214 pp. Set largely in locations near the French Riviera, these eleven short stories depict the harsh realities of life for the less-privileged inhabitants of this very privileged region. Distinguished French writer J. M. G. Le Clezio lends his voice to the dispossessed and explores his familiar themes of alienation, immigration, poverty, violence, indifference, the loss of beauty, and the betrayal of innocence. In one story an adolescent girl encounters the violence of a gang of masked bikers in a hostile and desolate housing project. In others a man stands by helplessly as a place of great beauty and deep childhood memory is slowly consumed and destroyed by a quickly developing city, an illegal immigrant desperate for work finds himself the prisoner of a ring trafficking in human beings, and two girls risk everything by running away from home and their dead-end factory jobs in search of a more meaningful life. At once tragic and evocative, these engrossing and beautifully crafted stories touch upon the loss of human values in a rapidly changing world. Le Clezio is an intensely atmospheric, nearly hallucinatory writer, and in his riveting and eviscerating short stories, dreams turn inexorably into nightmares. -- Booklist Mentioned in The New York Times (Paperback Row) December 28, 2008 About the author   (2002) Winner of the 2008 Nobel Prize for Literature, J. M. G. Le Clezio was born in Nice in 1940 and is one of France’s best-known contemporary writers. He has published more than thirty novels and nonfiction works. Dickson is a translator living in France. Her translations include Shams Nadir's The Astrolabe of the Sea and Mohammad Dib's The Savage Night (Nebraska 2001). Oxford University Press - 1984. - 586 pages - illustrated >>> Covers all aspects of children's literature. "More than 900 biographical entries deal with authors, illustrators, printers, publishers, educationists: among these, major figures are given extensive and penetrating consideration. Other entries cover traditional narrative materials; characters from books, cartoons, comic strips, radio, and television; genres such as school stories, science fiction, dime novels; printing and reproduction processes; and many aspects of children's play and learning. The plots of major works of fiction are summarized, with accounts of their publishing history and evaluations of their standing with today's readers. The historical span stretches from the early romances and legends enjoyed by children (though not composed for them) to the major publishing industry that children's books represent today. Equal attention is given to works from Britain, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and to those of non-English-language origin that have been assimilated into our children's reading; there are also brief surveys of the development and current state of children's literature in all countries for which reliable information is available. Apart from being a sine qua non for parents, teachers, and librarians, The Oxford Companion to Children's Literature contains useful reference material for collectors of early printed works and students of folk literature; it is besides an entertaining and enlightening book for anyone concerned with children's educational and imaginative development." - (from the blurb).  *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage each on each additional - See what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

Author Name   H M Tomlinson Title    Gallions Reach Binding    Hardcover Edition 1949 Publishe   Rupert Hard Davis Pages    494 The steamer moved upriver at half-speed, and the sounds of life fell with the sun. The shores grew blurred. The quiet was the dusk. The ship itself was hushed, and her men about their duties appeared at a task spectrally, out of nowhere. She might have been trying to reach her destination unobserved. The tired air spilling over the steamer's bows hardly reached the bridge. The bridge caught the last of the light, and a trace of anger that flushed the murk banked in the west, to which the ship was moving, was reflected in the face of an officer there, and gave him the distinction of a being exalted and stern. He was superior, and seemed to be brooding down over some passengers sitting in a group on the indistinct foredeck. They were murmuring in conversation, with a child asleep on a shawl beside one of the chairs. See photos for book condition.    Please see my other books.
