About the product Brenthurst Second Series, number 2. Standard edition limited to 850 copies. Large 4to; original crimson cloth; laminated pictorial dustwrapper, housed in removable protector; tinted top edge; silk markers; pp. 275 + (i), incl. index; several reproductions of contemporary illustrations, in monochrome and full colour. Earlier owner's bookplate to front free endpaper. A few fox spots to fore-edge, else fine."The name of John Blades Currey (1829-1904) is seldom mentioned in histories of southern Africa. Indeed, the young Englishman who arrived at the Cape in 1850 made little direct impact on its story. He was nonetheless to become a profound influence on some of the Cape's most famous men and an astute chronicler of the political and social events of his time. His memoirs, published here for the first time, cover half a century of Cape history, from 1850 to 1900. Soldiering, farming, copper-mining - Currey tried all these; then, on the advice of governor Sir George Grey he joined the Cape civil service. While in its employ in the late 1860s he was entrusted with the task of introducing to a sceptical Europe southern Africa's first diamond, the'Eureka'. Later, as secretary to the government of Griqualand West, he chose the new name of' Kimberley 'for the burgeoning diamond-fields town of New Rush. But in 1875 Currey was blamed for the diggers'rebellion there, and this led to his dismissal from office and blighted his subsequent public career. While he was in Kimbeley Currey befriended two young fortune-hunters, both of whom were to become renowned premiers of the Cape: Cecil John Rhodes and John X. Merriman. To both of them Currey was to remain a lifelong friend and counsellor.. He is revealed in the account not as a politician but as a man who helped to shape politicians, not as a man who made history but rather as one who was passionately part of it. The manuscript forms part of The Brenthurst Collection, as do the majority of the contemporary illustrations which complement the text." Volume 2 1971. Hard  cover with dust cover, 527 pages. Very good condition. Over 1kg. Compiled and translated by R.Raven-Hart During the first fifty years of Dutch colonisation at the Cape of Good Hope many travellers arrived in Table Bay, on their way to the East:some came voluntarily, others by force of circumstance.   They came ashore, looked around, observed strange, indigenous people, interesting plants and animals, they visited the little settlement, met the local personalities, wondered at the way-of-life. They also consulted and negotiated with the Dutch officials, and sought help in their difficulties.   And, most frequently, they recorded their impressions so as to inform and astonish their firneds in Europe with the wonders they had seen. These impressions were sometimes published; but more often they appeared in ships' log books and other mss, unpublished, and available to the researchers of today in archives and special liabraries only.   Such recorded impressions are the subject matter of this book: Major Raven-Hart has selected, transcribed and meticulously translated a total of 104 accounts by visitors to the Cape between 1652 and 1702. They are taken from the original Dutch, English, French, Portuguese, Danish and German; with one exception, the list is exhaustive for this period.   The language styles are varied; quaint and vivid, penetrating, and sometimes quite coarse.   To accompany the transcribed texts, and to help the reader enjoy and understand, Major Raven-Hart has provided background and context notes to describe contemporary happenings in Europe, official records by the Cape commanders and governors and biographical notes on the writers.   In the index the reader will find references to animals, plants, persons, names, etc; a glossary of foreign words, definitions of various sea-faring and navigational terms and expressions; identifications of flora and fauna, bibliographies; and explanatory notes. This index is not just a valuable and practical working tool-it is virtually a concentrated commpanion-book or vade mecum for late 17th C history of the Cape.   A feature of this book are the illustrations: the author has been able to find 65 engravings, maps, title pages, portraits-most of which have been reproduced as full-or double-pages.

Fair to good condition."This is not an autobiography in the usual sense but an attempt to show the influences in the life of a young South African of the first generation, in the period between the end of the Boer War and the outbreak of the first World War. Until 1914 I knew only the Cape Peninsula. These reminiscences, therefore, are of that narrow strip of land between Cape Town and Cape Point, separated from the mainland by the Cape Flats."

This'new Canaan', as Lady Anne Barnard called it, is described by Dr Burrows as'one of the richest repositories of our national heritage'. The success of the first printing of this book many years ago proves his claim. The history of the Swellendam Drostdy, the short-lived Swellendam republic, the birth and development of sheep farming, glimpses of the lovely old homesteads, and the families who owned them, Van Bredas, Van Reenens, Reitzes, Moodies; the story of the fabulous Barry empire, the lost seaports; all these are revealed in a book that is not only for the collector and historian but for all who enjoy a good story and glimpses of an intriguing, romantic past." About the product 8vo; original blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt publisher's monogram to upper cover; no dustwrapper; pp. xiii + (i) + 248, incl. index; plates; some illustrations in text. Very good condition."The arrival at the Cape of Good Hope, early in 1834, of Sir John Herschel and Thomas Maclear initiated for them a period of intense scientific endeavour. Herschel was graced by a name which, from the astronomical discoveries of his father, Sir William Herschel, was already a household word. The younger Herschel was arguably the most famous scientist ever to spend a significant portion of his life in the beneficial clime of the Cape. Much has been written about Herschel's scientific work at the Cape. The picture is far from complete, however.. This gives some justification for the publication of what is in fact the majority of the letters written by Herschel during his residence at the Cape. For Maclear the situation is quite the reverse. Completely unknown on his arrival at the Cape, he had steadily to build up fame on the foundations of industry and public service. By the time of his death in 1879 his repute was such that his passing moved even the Cape Parliament to a salutation.. Yet the nature of the man is hardly known in the country of his adoption, and his contributions are largely forgotten in his chosen profession. Although a full-scale biography is required to do justice to Maclear, the diaries and letters reproduced here will go some way towards establishing his character." Maclear&Herschel. SAPO and PAXI packages Dispatched within 4 business days. Courier packages Dispatched within 3 business days. Condition: Good. HSRC, 2007 - History - 240 pp. Name of previous owner on flyleaf. Cities are not only made of buildings and roads, but they are also constructed through popular imagination and memory as evidenced in this collection of oral and visual histories drawn from the people who live, work, and creatively express themselves in Cape Town, South Africa. The collected works move beyond apartheid history to analyze the reflective ways in which people are coming to terms with that history through memory, work, performance, and memorialization. "The overriding strength of this book is that it places people—ordinary people—at the centre of memory, at the centre of historical and contemporary experience, and thus at the centre of reimagining and owning the city of Cape Town. It is as they speak—what they choose to say, what they choose to remain silent about—that we become aware of the possibilities of the city, if it really did embrace all its people, in all of their diversity." —Mike van Graan, from the foreword.
