Roger Ballen "Boarding House" Art Photography Book, BRAND NEW, STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC “It is difficult to explain this place except that I think it exists in some way or another in most people’s mind.” – Roger Ballen Roger Ballen’s photographs are like images from a waking dream: compelling and thought-provoking, with layers of rich details, flashes of dark humor, and an altered sense of place. Blurring the boundaries between documentary photography and art, his work is both a powerful social statement and a complex psychological study. Roger Ballen's a new collection showcasing over 70 black and white images, mostly unpublished, this is Ballen’s most formally sophisticated work to date. The tableaux have a greater emphasis on drawn and sculptural elements, and the sense of collaboration between the artist and his subjects is increasingly relevant. An introductory essay by photography curator David Travis addresses the work in an accessible way, looking at these images in the wider context of Ballen’s career.   Boarding House  is a space of transient residence, of comings and goings, of people sheltered in a place they are using for their immediate survival. Basic and fundamental, the structure is furnished with objects necessary for an elementary existence, decorated with evocative drawings, and littered throughout with animals. Remnants function there as physical symbols of events that have occurred in the space; broken pieces of a functional reality exist as the leftovers of scenarios that have been played out there. The altered sense of place of this temporary abode creates a sense of alienation, which acts as a jumping off point for the imagination to run wild.

2007 paperback with 434 pages in good condition. R50 postage in SA. Inscribed and signed on front page by Pinard.                                                                                                                                                          A narrative that has its roots in the dark Middle Ages of Europe, and the brutal Roman Catholic inquisitions! Will history repeat itself? A saga of the persecuted French Huguenots, Jacques Pinard and his wife, Hester, who find refuge at the Cape of Good Hope in 1688. Almost 300 years later, a distant relative and son of Africa, Rueben Pinard, stumbles upon his French Huguenot heritage. His subsequent supernatural awakening to the faith of his forefathers and his prophetic calling. A vision, beginning with the powerful prophetic utterance: "You must go to the land of your ancestors!" An end-time scenario. A mysterious Jewish remnant. History repeats itself - a place of refuge. The Holy See, Opus Dei - a Personal Prelature. Apollyon/Abaddon - the 'Beast' of the last days - the man of sin. Global persecution of Christians. Implementation of Satan's seal of ownership - the infamous 666! The Great Tribulation. Battle of Jerusalem. The Return of the Son of Man with power and might! Thy Kingdom Come! Jesus' 1000 year reign from Jerusalem. Although the theme of this book is classified as fiction, a portion of the content is semi-autobiographical. The balance is premised upon certain Biblical, historical and contemporary facts. The backdrop being the last book in the Bible: the book of Revelation. Through the medium of faction (fact and fiction), the author weaves a realistic and exciting end-time drama around the book of Revelation. His purpose is to encourage everyone, everywhere, to read the last book of the Bible. The book of Revelation is the 'roadmap' of prophecy for these the last days! The author, together with his wife lives in Franschhoek (French Corner), South Africa, where theyadminister an end-time prophetic Internet ministry. They are committed Christians and are respectively 8th generation French Huguenot and Dutch religious refugee descendants. Because of this they have a rich Christian heritage. Therefore, the blood of the martyrs runs 'thickly' through their veins.

Unhappy Penelope Lumley is trapped in unhappy Plinkst! Even the beets for which Plinkst is inexplicably famous fail to grow in this utterly miserable Russian village. Penelope anxiously counts the days and wonders how she will ever get back to England in time to save all the Ashtons-who, she now knows, include herself and the Incorrigible children, although their precise location on the family tree is still a mystery-from their accursd fate. Her daring scheme to escape sends her on a wildly unexpected journey. But time is running out, and the not-really-dead Edward Ashton is still on the loose. His mad obsession with the wolfish curse on the Ashtons puts Penelope and the Incorrigibles in dire peril. As Penelope fights her way back to her beloved pupils, the three brave Incorrigibles endure their gloomy new tutor and worriedly prepare for the arrival of Lady Constance's baby. Little do they know the danger they're in! In this action-packed conclusion to the acclaimed series, mysteries are solved and long-lost answers are found. Only one question remains: Will Penelope and the Incorrigibles find a way to undo the family curse in time, or will the next full moon be their last? After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the collapse of Communism, and the advent of the Web which allowed for even the smallest voice to be heard, everywhere you turned you were told that we were living in an age of unparalleled freedom. 'You Can't Read This Book' argues that this view is dangerously naive. From the revolution in Iran that wasn't, to the Great Firewall of China and the imposition of super-injunctions from the filthy rich protecting their privacy, the traditional opponents of freedom of speech - religious fanaticism, plutocratic power and dictatorial states - are thriving and in many respects finding the world a more comfortable place in the early 21st century than they did in the late 20th.
