Stenoglottis fimbriata Seeds Common names: Fringed Stenoglottis; Fraiing-Stenoglottis   This charming, mauve, ground orchid  is easily identified by the dark markings found on the leaves and flowers. Stenoglottis fimbriata is a terrestrial tuberous orchid, reaching a height of 300-400 mm. It is found growing in a very thin humus or moss layer on rocks or in humus-rich soil in rock crevices or on tree trunks or fallen logs in shaded forests. The root system consists of a clump of elongated, fleshy tuberous roots. The roots are hairy, which allows the plant to attach itself to rocks. Leaves are dark green, lanceolate, 5-20 arranged in a basal rosette, ± 150 mm long and ± 20 mm wide. Leaves display wavy margins with recurved tips and are dotted with dark purple spots. The flowering stem is slender, purple in colour, 300 mm tall, leafless and bears small, green, spotted bracts. The lilac-pink flowers, 5-50, vary in size and are loosely arranged on a raceme. The raceme continues to elongate as the flowers open over a period of several weeks. All parts of the flower are spotted and lilac-pink in colour. The dorsal sepal is narrowly ovate and 4-8 mm long. The petals are elliptic to narrow, 3-6 mm long and thus shorter than the sepals. The three-lobed lip is a distinctive identifying character of the plant. It is 6-15 mm long, paler than the sepals but more densely spotted. The lateral lobes of the lip are usually shorter than the central lobe. They are often barely toothed or almost subdivided. Stenoglottis fimbriata flowers from January to April. Growing orchids from seed is a fairly specialized undertaking and it requires a bit of understanding of tissue culture techniques. If you have never grown orchids from seed we recommend that before attempting this you should first contact your local Orchid Society, or purchase a book on the subject, or both! On offer is a pack of 10+ Seeds

Satyrium coriifolium Seeds Common Names: Ewwa-trewwa, Goue-trewwa, Ouma-trewwa, Rooi-trewwa With its brightly coloured yellow or orange-red flowers, Satyrium coriifolium is one of the most attractive terrestrial orchids of the Cape Floristic Region. It is also one of the few species in its genus that is suitable for cultivation. The plants are perennial and have large underground tubers which enable them to survive the dry summer. Stems are mostly 25 to 50 cm tall and are normally very robust. Satyrium coriifolium can readily be distinguished from all others in its genus by its stiff leathery, semi-erect leaves with orange-red bars near the sheathing bases. The flower spike with its bright orange or yellow, comparatively large nodding flowers is very striking. As is typical in the genus Satyrium, the flowers are 'non-resupinate' (meaning that their hood-like lip faces up while the sepals and petals point down). The lip has generally two spurs in Satyrium, which is unique in orchids. The main flowering time of the species is from August through to November, depending on the available moisture in the habitat of the plants. Satyrium coriifolium is found in the western and eastern parts of the Cape Floristic Region from Cape Town to Grahamstown, and northwards as far as Clanwilliam. Its most common habitat is moist, sandy flats below 300 m above sea level (rarely up to 750 m). Colonies are often extensive and may consist of hundreds of plants. Though not essential for flowering, fire appears to have a marked enhancing effect on the flowering as in many other Cape orchids. It is hardly surprising that the bright flowers of this species attract sunbirds. The birds perch on the sturdy stems of the plants and feed on the nectar in their flowers. In the process, the pollinia (orchid pollen is normally united to form clumps termed 'pollinia') are attached to the bird's beaks. Bird species involved are mainly Malachite Sunbirds, but also occasional visits by Orange-breasted Sunbirds and Lesser Double-collared Sunbirds have been reported. Growing orchids from seed is a fairly specialized undertaking and it requires a bit of understanding of tissue culture techniques. If you have never grown orchids from seed we recommend that before attempting this you should first contact your local Orchid Society, or purchase a book on the subject, or both! Eulophia welwitschii Seeds This attractive orchid makes a striking display in summer with its bright yellow inflorescence, especially when occurring in dense stands. It is often seen in marshy areas and seasonally inundated grasslands, but sadly, due to human activities, this species is less commonly seen in urban areas. Growing orchids from seed is a fairly specialized undertaking and it requires a bit of understanding of tissue culture techniques. If you have never grown orchids from seed we recommend that before attempting this you should first contact your local Orchid Society, or purchase a book on the subject, or both! Eulophia welwitschii is a perennial, terrestrial orchid, about 800 mm high, with underground corms, and stiffly erect leaves which are present at flowering time. The leaves are strongly pleated. The flowers are borne on a single, tall flowering stem in a dense head of up to 25 flowers. Both the petals and sepals are yellow (pale green or cream-coloured in some cases) with the sepals and petals held close together. It has dark red-purple markings on the inside of the side lobes and base of the lip and thread-like crest papillae. The spur is slender and short and hidden by the bracts. It flowers from November to January, coinciding with the summer rains. After flowering, the plants produce one or more seed capsules on the flower spike. When they are dry and grey-brown, they burst open to release thousands of seeds which are very small, almost dust-like, and are dispersed by wind. You're buying a pack of 10 Seeds
