The book is old, and the pages may be browned. There are creases on the spine and corners, and worn around the edges. The book is still very readable, but has seen some wear. The Lonely sea by Alistair MacLean Collection of riveting tales of the sea including the story that launched his writing career, the account of the epic battle to sink the German battle ship, Bismarck, and two new stories collected here for the first time. THE MASTER STORYTELLER IN HIS ELEMENT...Alistair MacLean has an unmistakable and unrivalled skill in writing about the sea and its power and about the men and women who sail it, and who fight and die in it. His distinctive voice was evident from his very first prize-winning story, 'The Dileas', and has been heard time and again in his international career as the author of such bestsellers as H.M.S. Ulysses and San Andreas. The Lonely Sea starts where MacLean's career started, with 'The Dileas', and collects together his stories of the sea. Here is a treasury of vintage MacLean, compelling and brilliant, where the master storyteller is in his element. This reissue includes two new stories, 'The Good Samaritan' and 'The Black Storm', which bear all the classic hallmarks of MacLean's finest writing and are published here for the very first time.

Fishermen Bolivar and Hector set sail from their South American village, but soon find themselves cast adrift in the Pacific Ocean by a sudden storm. As the days pass and no rescue materialises, the two men must come to terms with their environment, and with each other, if they are to survive. Part gripping survival story, part fearless existential parable, Beyond the Sea is a meditation on what it means to be a man, a friend, a father and a sinner in our fallen world. As deep and timeless as the sea, this novel sits squarely in the tradition of Camus, Borges, Joyce, Beckett, and McCarthy.  At 10 am on 15 June 1972, the 19-ton, 43-foot schooner Lucette, sailed by a Scottish ex-farmer and his family, was attacked by killer whales in the Pacific, and sank in 60 seconds. What happened after that is the subject of one of the most astounding survival stories ever to be told.  In an inflatable rubber raft, with a 9-foot fiberglass dinghy to tow it, Dougal Robertson and his crew of five - his wife, 18-year-old son and 12-year-old twin boys, and a student friend - decided to make for the coast of Costa Rica, 1000 miles and an estimated 50 days away.  They had emergency rations of food and water for only three days, a handful of random items salvaged from Lucette, and no maps or compass or instruments of any kind.  Steering by the sun and stars, they set course for the Doldrums. A ship passed near them by failed to see their flares, leaving them to face death from thirst, starvation and exhaustion.  But they did not die.  Their raft sank under them and still they did not die.  Cramped together in their tiny dinghy with only six inches of freeboard, they clawed a space for themselves in the savage ecology of the ocean, on constant alert against 20-foot waves, marauding sharks, and numerous other hazards, through rain, storm, calm and equatorial heat.  With knowledge as their primary weapon, love as their bond, courage and self-sacrifice became a way of life, as mile after mile these six humans in the vast reaches of the Pacific refused to admit defeat. Hard cover, fairly good condition, with dust jacket.  The book shows some signs of wear, and foxing.  223 pages.

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 11 working days If you were terrified watching Open Water or The Shallows, or suffered along with Aron Ralston through his ordeal in 127 Hours, you will find this true story of Brett Archibald's ordeal, lost overboard in the Indian Ocean, absolutely extraordinary. 'When I heard Brett had fallen overboard, after twelve hours I said, "There's no way anyone can survive longer than that in the ocean - I certainly couldn't do it." This is an incredible, incredible story.' Oscar Chalupsky, Twelve times Molokai Paddleboard World Champion In April 2013, fifty-year-old Brett Archibald was on board a surf-charter boat, making a night-time crossing of the Mentawai Strait off Sumatra, Indonesia. In the middle of a storm, ill with severe food poisoning, Brett was being sick overboard when, for a moment, he blacked out. When he came to, he found himself alone in the raging sea, being spun as if in a washing machine. Sixty miles from shore, Brett saw the lights of his boat disappearing into the darkness. It was very quickly clear that no one had seen him fall, and that no one would hear his shouts for help. He was alone in the ocean. It would be eight hours before his friends realised he was missing. At that point a frantic search began, for a single man hopefully still alive somewhere in thousands of square miles of heaving waves. The Mentawai Strait is remote and the rough weather meant that no planes or helicopters could assist in the search. This is the remarkable story of Brett's ordeal, and his miraculous rescue after twenty-eight hours alone in the ocean; also of his family and friends back home and around the world and the Australian skipper whose sheer doggedness and instinct played such a key role in saving Brett. This is an ex-lib with the usual markings - remained in good condition though - sadly no dustjacket.    >>>    Fourth in a series of stories about Lydia, Jean and little Mark - escapades about very real small children. Plum Daffy is a house on the dunes of Cape Cod, and it is there that the children spend a summer filled with kinds of things that might happen. Jean forgets the oars and almost floats out to sea; the children are caught by a storm and spend an eerie night at the lighthouse; Captain Dan spins tall tales and spouts little poems. The short episodes would be quite the thing for short classroom read-aloud-and third graders could read them to themselves. *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me you only pay R 6 postage on each additional book – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.
