Following the signing of the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, Germany was not permitted to build or operate submarines. However, clandestine training onboard Finnish and Spanish submarines took place and U-boats were still built to German designs in Dutch yards. At the outset of the Second World War, Dönitz argued for a 300-strong U-boat fleet, since his force of 57 U-boats 'could only inflict pin-pricks against British seaborne trade'. In August 1939, U-48 left Germany, commanded by 'Vaddi' Schultze, to take up a waiting position around England. It scored its first success on 5 September, when it torpedoed the British freighter Royal Sceptre, then the Winkleigh on 8 September. On both occasions — the first of many — Schultze showed himself to be a notable humanitarian: he addressed signals to Churchill giving positions of the sinkings so that crews could be saved. By 1 August 1941, U-48, the most successful boat of the Second World War, had sunk 56 merchant ships of 322,478 gross tons and one corvette. She was then transferred to the Baltic as a training boat. Schultze became commander of operation 3 U-Flotilla and later was appointed commander, II/Naval College Schleswig. He died in 1987 at the age of 78. U-48 was scuttled on 3 May 1945.

Centenary War Novelty FDC - Salved From The Sea - Dated May 6 1940 - this cover has been folded vertically as can be seen from the image, apart from which all else is good. I have only ever heard of one other cover like this, Salved From The Sea & the English gentleman in whose possession it was could not be persuaded to part with it. So this is indeed a very great find. A bit of information re: this cover This Royal Philatelic Society Cover was cancelled with the Stamp Centenary Exhibition Red Cross London red hand stamp on the first day of the exhibition 6 May 1940 and than travelled as follows: By mail boat to Montreal By air mail to Vancouver Pencilled above Air Mail Says Trans Canada Back stamped with Guaranteed BCM/Airfield London It was then sent back to Montreal by rail where it was transferred to a mail boat that was wrecked by enemy action. The full story of Aston House in the Second World War has never been told before. Its activities were top secret and as important to the Allied war effort as those of Bletchley Park, but in a different way. Situated near Stevenage, Aston House was one of many British country houses requisitioned during the Second World War by the Special Operations Executive (SOE). Born out of Bletchley Park, where it began life as SIS Section 'D' (for Destruction), Station 12's scientific and military personnel invented, made and supplied 'toys' for the Commandos, Special Boat Service, SAS, and resistance groups. Included in their deadly arsenal of weapons were plastic explosives, limpet mines, pressure switches, tree spigots, incendiary bombs, incendiary liquids and arrows, and a variety of time fuses. They worked on the tools for famous operations, such as the St Nazaire and Dieppe Raids, and the assassination of Himmler's deputy in Prague. Also revealed are the human stories of personnel stationed in this extremely remote village and teh explosive pranks they played on each other, and certain visitors, which add some light relief to their destructive purpose.

Kennedy History: John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born in Brookline, Massachusetts, on May 29, 1917. He enrolled at Harvard in 1940 and, during his senior year, wrote his thesis on Great Britain’s lack of readiness for war with Germany, which was later published as Why England Slept. Despite numerous health problems, Kennedy joined the U.S. Navy after graduation and went to the South Pacific, where he was injured when the patrol torpedo boat he commanded was rammed by an enemy warship. Despite his injuries, Kennedy guided the surviving crew members to safety and was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal and a Purple Heart for his heroism. Following his military service, Kennedy worked as a reporter for a brief period before successfully running for the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served from 1947 to 1953, and then the U.S. Senate, serving there from 1953 to 1960. During his tenure in the Senate, while recuperating from back surgery, Kennedy wrote his Pulitzer Prize–winning book, Profiles in Courage. The Democratic Party nominated Kennedy as its candidate for president in 1960. He won the election by a small margin, becoming the youngest man elected president and the first Roman Catholic to hold the office. Kennedy was in office less than three years when he was struck down by an assassin’s bullet on November 22, 1963. Highlights of President Kennedy’s administration include the: Launch of the first American manned spaceflight, Freedom 7 Bay of Pigs invasion, an attempt to overthrow Cuban leader Fidel Castro Cuban Missile Crisis, the confrontation between the U.S. and Soviet Union over nuclear missiles in Cuba Signing of the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, an agreement between the U.S., Great Britain and Soviet Union to ban nuclear weapons testing in the atmosphere, space and underwater Establishment of the Peace Corps   SPECIFICATIONS Denomination:$1 Composition:6% Zinc, 3.5% Manganese  2% Nickel, Balance Copper Weight:8.100 grams Diameter:1.043 inches (26.49 mm) Edge:Lettered Mint and Mint Mark:Philadelphia – P Denver – D    weight: 10g Combine orders up to 2kg via courier     MORE ITEMS HERE PAYMENT within 3 days, please else items will be relisted and a SALE NOT COMPLETE will be filed If you're placing multiple orders to combine shipping please notify seller, beforehand to avoid a SNC
