The album features a cover of a song from Blackmore's previous band "Deep Purple"; "Mistreated". The album was recorded live over several German and Japanese dates in late 1976 during the "Rising" world tour. Many of the tracks were spliced together from different dates by producer Martin Birch, and the running order was changed to more easily fit four sides of vinyl. His first Afrikaans album, Oomblik van Waansin (with a title that is a tribute to Pink Floyds Momentary Lapse of Reason) is a deeply personal and lyrical chronicle of his own journey: It is about the way I grew up, my mom and dad, social influences. In 2001 he won a Geraas Award as the Best Songwriter in Afrikaans for Oomblik van Waansin. Mel's affinity for conceptual stage shows was demonstrated again in 2005 with the musical play Flight of Bird during the Aardklop Arts Festival in Potchefstroom. The production was nominated for an AngloGold Ashanti Smeltkroes Award. Composing soundtracks for movies and television drama has become one of his ways of expressing and stretching himself musically.
