1978 printing.  Soft cover, 469 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. “One of the first histories to treat non-whites as active self conscious protagonists in twentieth-century South African affairs rather than as a dark acquiescent host before which the really important story of white South Africa unfolds.  The new edition has been corrected and eight new chapters extend the coverage to the end of 1963.  It is an important addition to the literature about South Africa.”— The Historian Eddie Roux, one of the early pioneers of radical non-racial activism in colonial South Africa has written this wonderful book which blends historical facts with empathy for his subject. He locates the struggle for freedom in South Africa within the broader context of the struggle for radical change. The early attempts at drawing a non-racial perspective, the internal battles of the Communist Party of South Africa as it was grappling with articulating a theory of class struggle appropriate to South Africa...The book is truly a tribute to the enduring spirit of the fight for freedom in South Africa.

Black Hamlet First published in 1937, "Black Hamlet" is a chronicle of physician Wulf Sachs' experiences psychoanalysing a man from a Johannesburg slum for two-and-a-half years. Originally an attempt to learn whether psychoanalysis was applicable across different cultures, Sachs' findings became so much more. "Black Hamlet" is a narrative reconstruction of one black South African's life as two worlds collide. Critically acclaimed when first published, this fascinating book will appeal to those with an interest in psychology and psychoanalysis, and it is not to be missed by collectors of related literature. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in a modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork. Author Wulf Sachs ISBN 1473348242, 9781473348240 Format Paperback Pages 276p.

Attached to each victim is a letter insulting the English. The group is attacked by poor Indian men during their investigation but are helped by the Indian Prince Soma and his butler Agni, who are searching for Soma's servant Meena, who was taken away by a British man. Although Agni is human as a fighter he's on a par with Sebastian but he rejects such compliments however, saying that he once had power and wealth, which he abused until he was to be hanged. He was saved by Soma, who gave him a new life and name and who Agni now views as a god. Agni leaves the manor at night and the group including Soma, follow him to Lord West's home.
