This is an original 470 year old hand coloured print from the first edition of Conrad Gessner's bird book published at Zurich by Christoffel Froschower in 1557. Gessner's bird book was part of a four volume set known as the Historiae Animalium or "Histories of Animals" appearing from 1551-1558. It was an encyclopedic work of an inventory of Renaissance zoology. Conrad Gessner (1516-1565) was a Swiss naturalist and bibliographer. It is the first modern zoological work that attempts to describe all known animals, and the first bibliography of natural history writings. Historiae Animalium appeared in four volumes (quadrupeds, birds, fishes) from 1551-1558. Volume 1 was an illustrated work on live-bearing four-footed animals, Volume 2 on egg-laying quadrupeds, Volume three on birds and Volume four on fish and other aquatic animals. A condensed popular version translated into German and known as Gessner's Thierbuch or "animal book" was published in Zurich in 1563. Gessner was a protestant and his work was added to the Roman Catholic Church's list of prohibited books soon after publication. Pope Paul IV strongly believed that the religious convictions of an author contaminated all his writings. Though it is a large work Gessner sought to distinguish facts from myth, his encyclopedic work also included mythical creatures and imaginary beasts, intermixed with the strange newly discovered animals from the East Indies, those of the far north and animals brought back from the New World. Gessner made many of the illustrations for this work himself but acknowledges that he also sought the help of other artists, one being Lucas Schan from Strasbourg. The layout of the work is in the traditional style of the emblem book where images are accompanied by explanatory text and the names of animals are given in different languages. Gessner was ennobled in 1564 and in many later sources he is referred to as Conrad Von Gessner. He did not live long as a nobleman though as he died from the plague scarcely a year later. Patrons of the period had the option of purchasing either uncoloured copies for 2 Guilders or coloured copies for 3 Guilders. If the order was for a coloured copy the book was then sent to specialist shops for this purpose. This leaf is from an incomplete coloured copy. The leaf is in great condition for it's age with some light age yellowing on the margins, two marginal worm holes and some slight colour show through on the verso.

Written in the age of the atom when America and Europe optimisitcally viewed the discovery of life on Mars as inevitable, Bradbury's 1940s short stories of a brutal, stark and unforgiving martian landscape were as shocking and visionary as they were insightful. `The Martian Chronicles' tells the story of humanity's repeated attempts to colonize the red planet. The first men were few. Most succumbed to a disease they called the Great Loneliness when they saw their home planet dwindle to the size of a pin dot. Those few that survived found no welcome. The shape-changing Martians thought they were native lunatics and duly locked them up. More rockets arrived from Earth, piercing the hallucinations projected by the Martians. People brought their old prejudices with them - and their desires and fantasies, tainted dreams. These were soon inhabited by the strange native beings, with their caged flowers and birds of flame. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 13 working days Moved by the Aboriginal understandings of songlines or dreaming tracks, Norie Neumark's Voicetracks seeks to deepen an understanding of voice through listening to a variety of voicing/sound/voice projects from Australia, Europe and the United States. Not content with the often dry tone of academic writing, the author engages a "wayfaring" process that brings together theories of sound, animal, and posthumanist studies in order to change the ways we think about and act with the assemblages of living creatures, things, places, and histories around us.Neumark evokes both the literal -- the actual voices within the works she examines -- and the metaphorical -- in a new materialist exploration of voice encompassing human, animal, thing, and assemblages. She engages with artists working with animal sounds and voices; voices of place, placed voices in installation works; voices of technology; and "unvoicing," disturbances in the image/voice relationship and in the idea of what voice is. She writes about remixes, the Barbie Liberation Organisation, and breath in Beijing, about cat videos, speaking fences in Australia, and an artist who reads (to) the birds. Finally, she considers ethics and politics, and describes how her own work has shaped her understandings and apprehensions of voice.  Birders of a feather - Harvey Tyson - 1998 - Paperback in very good condition. Expert birders, writers and poets tell of their experiences and interests – or lack of interest – in birds and birding. I learned from this that writing books is much easier than compiling them – particularly where professional writers are contributing requested work.
