While the selection of role-playing games for the PlayStation2 is currently limited, Konami could have selected from a number of strong RPGs it has published in Japan. Instead the company serves up a mediocre offering in the shape of a game that's originality is negated by frustrating and difficult gameplay, making it appealing only to hard-core RPG fans. Unlike most RPGs, you won't be controlling a warrior. Instead you follow the adventures of a bard named Mouse. Some of Mouse's occupation-related tasks include composing songs and playing rhythm games similar to Konami's Beatmania. Most of the game has Mouse reliving the same day (think Groundhog Day). Although he's stuck in a time loop, he retains the items and allies acquired each time he relives the day. It's an interesting twist but the plot eventually devolves into the usual saving-the-world drivel. The game's graphics aren't going to impress anyone--there are several PS One games that look better. Further hampering playability are several lulls in the game where you have to wait until a certain time until you can progress. This wouldn't be so bad if there were engaging side quests for you to take, but there aren't, so you're often stuck standing around town. When the action does pick up, it's often brought to a halt by extremely long load times. The reasons why become clear as you play your way through a series of flashbacks, some of which draw heavily from the previous games in the series. Fortunately, the similarities also stretch to the gameplay, which is by turns taut, tense and violent. The game gives you plenty of freedom in choosing how to tackle the various missions you're presented with, and particularly in the early stages it's tremendously good fun working out the best way to achieve an objective. There are a couple of drawbacks: the game is a little shorter than might be expected, and it is more of an evolution from previous adventures than a independent sequel. But these are minor niggles, especially when you consider that this is the best game to date in the Hitman franchise. Review In a nutshell: If you enjoyed the multiplayer mode in Ratchet & Clank 3 then this is going to be right up your star system. Its basically Annihilation Nation expanded to make a full game with a proper story mode and both split screen and online multiplayer. It's in the latter mode that Ratchet & Clank really shines. The lowdown: Finally shedding any pretence of being a platformer this new game has more in common with Unreal Tournament 2004 than it does Super Mario. Ratchet (Clank really isnt in it much) has been press ganged into an ultra violent game show where he has to destroy everything in his path in order to pull in the ratings. To help him, hes got a huge range of customisable weapons and a small pool of vehicles. The single player is perfectly fun on its own but the real draw is the co-operative mode and the online multiplayer with its myriad of different modes and options. Most exciting moment: Sitting atop a spider tank and commanding your army of bots to annihilate your best friend online. Since you ask: This is actually the fourth Ratchet & Clank game from developer Insomniac Games, who also did the three Spyro the Dragon games for the PSone.. The bottom line: Not a ￢ﾀﾜproper￢ﾀﾝ Ratchet & Clank but still a great multiplayer game. Harrison Dent
