Instead, he begins to talk to her and they soon fall in love but he later discovers that she is terminally ill. Meanwhile, Peter is being pursued by his old boss, ruthless gangster Pearly Soames (Crowe), to whom he owes a debt, but he is saved by a white horse and finds himself transported into the future. Suffering from amnesia, Peter encounters Virginia Gamely (Jennifer Connelly) who helps him to recall his past and, driven by his love for Beverly, he tries to find a way to bring her back to life.
