Book looks new and unread to me - Originally published in 1922, this is the 1997 edition.   >>>   Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, in his later years became attracted to spiritualism and occult topics. This was after the death of his son Raymond during World War I. While researching the topic of fairies, some photographs from a working-class family in rural Yorkshire were brought to Doyle's attention by a Theosophist friend. These photographs appeared to show diminutive fairies cavorting in the presence of humans, specifically two teenage girls, Elsie and Frances. They had taken the photographs by themselves, and there were no overt signs that the negatives had been tampered with. Doyle championed the photographs, and in the process destroyed his reputation; which is probably why this book, out of all of the Doyle corpus, has not been put into etext until now. The Coming of the Fairies  was possibly a bigger disappointment for Doyle fans than when he killed off Sherlock Holmes.    *N.B.*   If you buy more books from me you only pay R 6 postage each on the additional books – see what else I have to offer, it might be worth your while.

"An intricate story about war, family, secrets and, yes, wood... An engaging, satisfying read" The Times "So cleverly plotted, and it builds up such effortless dramatic momentum as it zeroes in on its conclusion" Scotsman Edvard grows up on a remote mountain farmstead in Norway with his taciturn grandfather, Sverre. The death of his parents, when he was three years old, has always been shrouded in mystery - he has never been told how or where it took place and has only a distant memory of his mother. But he knows that the fate of his grandfather's brother, Einar, is somehow bound up with this mystery. One day a coffin is delivered for his grandfather long before his death - a meticulous, beautiful piece of craftsmanship. Perhaps Einar is not dead after all. Edvard's desperate quest to unlock the family's tragic secrets takes him on a long journey - from Norway to the Shetlands, and to the battlefields of France - to the discovery of a very unusual inheritance. The Sixteen Trees of the Somme is about the love of wood and finding your own self, a beautifully intricate and moving tale that spans an entire century. Mytting's book is as much a romantic historical thriller as it is a book of promise, a page-turner as it is a reflective journey into selfhood, history, life's meaning and individual moral responsibility - Mika Provata-Carlone, Bookanista Translated from the Norwegian by Paul Russell Garrett Features Summary A 20th-century family saga of epic scale, by the author of Norwegian Wood Author Lars Mytting (Author), Paul Russell Garrett (Translator) Publisher MacLehose Press Release date 20181001 Pages 416 ISBN 0-85705-606-9 ISBN 13 978-0-85705-606-1

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days At once a powerful love story and an intricately plotted mystery, Winterton Blue is the breathtaking new novel from the Booker Prize finalist and national best-selling author of The Hiding Place and Remember Me. Trezza Azzopardi's third book is a moving and often amusing testament to the tenacious staying power of family and memory, and the pull toward unlikely but destined romance. For the last twenty years, Lewis has been baunted by his brother's death. He's tried hiding from it, running from it, erasing it from his memory, but the ghost of Wayne confronts him at every turn. Then he meets Anna, who is haunted by her mother, Rita--who happens to be very much alive. Rita is the exact opposite of her daughter: loud, carefree, and a daredevil. At seventy-six, she still runs a guesthouse on the coast and has a boyfriend, Vernon, a retired actor and bon vivant. Together they make a formidable pair, living life as if every day might be their last. Anna would be happy for them, if not for the memory of her late father, a reserved and careful man. Into this environment of carousing, music hall turns, and cocktails, stumbles Lewis, on a quest to find the person he believes responsible for the death of his brother. He recognizes a kindred spirit in Anna, and she in him, but at first both are too headstrong to admit that they are susceptible to love. Against the backdrop of the Norfolk coast, with its massive skies and relentless seas, they finally learn to trust each other, and accept that an uncertain future can be as wild and alluring as the landscape they have grown to love. In linked autobiographical essays, Nelson has reimagined the memoir with her thoroughly original voice, fearless writing, and hypnotic storytelling. At its center, the book is the story of three people: Nelson's mother Susan, her brother Eric, and Jessica herself. These three characters are deeply bound to one another, not just by the usual ties of blood and family, but also by a mother's drive to keep her children safe in the midst of chaos. The book begins with Nelson's childhood in the suburbs of Philadelphia and chronicles her father's addiction and death, her brother's battle with drugs and mental illness, her own efforts to find and maintain stability, and her mother's exquisite power, grief, and self-destruction in the face of such a complicated family dynamic. Each chapter in the book contends with a different relationship--friends, lovers, and strangers are all play--but at its heart the book is about family, the ties that bind and enrich and betray us, and how one young woman sought to survive and rise above her surroundings.
