The first game was a very decent pastiche of Metal Gear Solid, but subsequent sequels seemed to become increasingly less so, to the point where this fourth title is really make or break for the series. The Omega Strain 's big new feature, as with many sequels nowadays, is that the game is now playable online, and rather than being an afterthought or grossly simplified version of the single player mode there's actually an impressive attempt to put the whole game online, where it's playable by up to four people at a time. The only problem is that because the online and offline modes are so similar this actually means that if you know what you're doing, and particularly if you've got microphone headsets to co-ordinate yourselves with, it all becomes rather easy--a fact that a rather intrusive time limit cannot really balance out. But the problem with the online mode isn't really that it's too easy but that the basic gameplay of the single player mode just doesn't cut the mustard anymore. Considering the advances made in Metal Gear Solid 3, the Syphon Filter franchise just seems to be treading water and the rather weak graphics, stodgy controls and generally uninspired level design are rather more typical of Syphon Filter 2 and 3 than the original. Yes, this is the same Codemasters that brought us Colin McRae, but you would be wrong in thinking it's of the same standard, far from it unfortunately. This is a game that owes more to the old-style arcade fist fights than the more sophisticated likes of Knockout Kings, as is only too apparent when the fighting starts, with the punches being basic and the movements jerky, with camera angles adding extra confusion. The game has various modes to choose from, including a World mode. Here its up to you to train your fighter, work your way through the ranks with the aim of unifying the belts and enter the gym where you need to develop a strict training regime. One of the nicer elements is the haymaker punch, which is obtained by producing a sting of scoring punches. If your training pays off, you have 10 seconds to unleash a punch, or your moment of glory is lost, which is rather similar to this game. If you can put up with the slow jerky movement and the dull gameplay you might find a redeeming feature in the Showcase option where up to eight of you can fight in a knockout tournament. A good idea, and ideal for the simple boxing fan, but with the Knockout Kings series going from strength to strength, you can help thinking that this is one Naz can't walk away with. -- Robert Holliday

Like the last game this is a first person shoot em-up with no pretentions about complex storytelling or realism, just the ability to fight lots and lots of bug-eyed monsters. It turns out theyve escaped from the titular army base and youre cast as a Special Forces soldier sent to invade their space. Thankfully youre not sent in alone and you have full control over a squad of ally soldiers, as you order them around by sending them to specific areas or telling them to target a particular bad guy. Each soldier will have their own level of morale, where doing badly makes them poorer shots and eventually convinces them to make a run for it. Thankfully the opposite is true if theyre feeling confident though. Youll also be able to hitch a lift on various vehicles, from jeeps to helicopters, for one of a number of fun on-the-rails shooting sections. The game also comes with a wide range of online multiplayer, including a co-operative mode for two people. If there really are any aliens in Area 51 one then this should convince them to stay exactly where they are. Harrison Dent
