A record 197 nations, all current IOC member nations, took part in the Games, comprising 10,318 athletes. The International Olympic Committee voted in 1986 to separate the Summer and Winter Games, which had been held in the same year since 1924, and place them in alternating even-numbered years, beginning in 1994. The 1996 Summer Games were the first to be staged in a different year from the Winter Games. Atlanta became the fifth American city to host the Olympic Games and the third to hold a Summer Olympic Games. The inscriptions include ¿Liberty¿, ¿In God we Trust¿, and ¿1996¿ with the US Olympic logo between the last two elements. The obverse was designed by Calvin Massey.The reverse of the coin was the same one used for all of the 1996 Olympic Silver Dollars issued. It features the logo from the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games with numerous inscriptions. For the second straight Olympic games, the American men's team composed almost completely of NBA players won the gold medal.This was also the last Olympics before the founding of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) in the United States, and it has been the only Summer Olympics to take place in a city with an NBA team ﾖ since the International Olympic Committee started allowing these professional players to compete ﾖ because Atlanta is the home of the Atlanta Hawks team. The artistic gymnastics events were held at the Georgia Dome from July 20ﾖ25 and July 28ﾖ29. The rhythmic gymnastics events were held at Stegeman Coliseum in nearby Athens, on the campus of the University of Georgia from August 1ﾖ4.
