Young Mandela Nelson Mandela is the world's greatest idol. He has been mythologised as a flawless hero of the liberation struggle. But how exactly did his early personal and political life shape the triumphs to come? This book goes behind the myth to find the man who people have forgotten or never knew - Young Mandela, the commited freedom fighter, who left his wife and children behind to go on the run from the police in the early 1960s. For the first time, we have evidence of a specific personal motivation for Mandela's fight against apartheid, and the book sheds light on the significant extent to which Mandela relied on white activists - a part of South African history the ANC has ignored or tried to bury. Mandela's historic achievements came with a heavy price - this biography graphically describes the emotional turmoil he left in his wake. After meticulous research, and taking a lead from Mandela's trusted circle, the author discovers much that is new, with many surprising, sometimes shocking details that will enhance our understanding of the world's elder statesman. Sanctified, lionised, it turns out that Mandela is a human being after all, only too aware of his flaws and shortcomings. With unique access to people and papers, culminating in a meeting with Nelson Mandela himself, David James Smith has written the single most important contribution to our knowledge of this global icon.   Author     David James Smith ISBN       0297858459, 9780297858454 Format    Paperback Pages     340p.

It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 4 - 10 working days "Discover South Africa's first black artist working in an international style. Like Monet, who was his first inspiration, Moses Tladi was a gardener and an artist. Born in remote Sekhukhuneland, east of Pretoria, South Africa, the son of a medicine-man who made a living by working in iron, and a mother who was a gifted potter, Tladi in his early childhood herded cattle in the dramatic hill-country around his home. His parents had become ""believers"" under the influence of the Berlin Missionary Society and he was educated at the Lobethal mission, at ga Phaahla. Tladi, like many young men of the time, went to the cities in search of work. It is not known how he encountered Herbert Read, but in the mid 1920s he found employment in Johannesburg as gardener to Read at his property in the fashionable suburb of Parktown. Tladi's talent was discovered by Herbert Read's daughters who were schoolgirls in the mid-1920s. Read took Tladi under his wing, and introduced him to the collector and philanthropist Howard Pim. Read and Pim promoted Tladi at public exhibitions from 1929 onwards. Pim died in1934, but Tladi continued to flourish, with Read as his patron until the outbreak of the Second World War." Features Summary Moses Tladi 1903 – 1959 In December 1931 Moses Tladi became the first black artist ever to exhibit in the South African National Gallery. His first appearance... This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 15 working days On a stormy November night in 1848, a ship carrying more than a hundred Irish emigrants ran aground twenty miles off the coast of Maine. Many were saved, but some were not -- including a young girl who died crying out the name of her brother. In the present day, the artist Oisin MacDara lives in self-imposed exile on Tiranogue -- the small island where the shipwrecked Irish settled. The past is Oisin's curse, as memories of the twin sister who died tragically when he was a boy haunt him still. Then on a quiet All Hallows' Eve, a restless spirit is beckoned into his home by a candle flickering in the window: the ghost of the girl whose brief life ended on Tiranogue's shore more than a century earlier. In Oisin's house she seeks comfort and warmth, and a chance at the life that was denied her so long ago. For a lonely man chained by painful memories, nothing will ever be the same again. Features Summary A middle-aged artist in Maine is haunted by the ghost of a girl shipwrecked in the town more than 150 years earlier. This Is My World. The Life of Helen Martins, Creator of the Owl House by Susan Imrie Ross   Hard cover in good condition. Dust jacket in good condition in protective plastic. Set in the confines of small-town South Africa, this biography of Helen Martins tells the story of the artist's struggle to transform her world. The author considers what it was that drove Martins to live a life both startling in its hopefulness and tragic in its loneliness. In doing so, she seeks to restore weight and dignity to this frequently misunderstood woman. The interviews, letters and photographs that describe the artist's search for personal identity also document the metamorphosis of an ordinary Karoo house into the Owl House - one of South Africa's foremost examples of Outsider art - and place Martins in the context of other outsider artists.

Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn't you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man's life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final " class" lessons in how to live. "Tuesdays with Morrie" is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie's lasting gift with the world.
