"SOUTH AFRICAN RESERVE BANK COLLECTION" 2007, CONTRIBUTIONS BY DR. RORY BESTER, JODI BRENNER & OTHERS The art collection of the Reserve Bank is regarded as one of the premier corporate collections in the country, with its outstanding strength being landscape art produced between 1900 and 1970. The collection contains a number of historically important works and works by contemporary artists. The collection has its origins in artworks that were accumulated and intended for display in hotels attached to the railway stations in Cape Town and Pretoria. When the state abandoned these hotel plans, the 146 artworks were put up for sale at two much-anticipated auctions in 1954 and 1955.   In the ensuing years the Bank’s eclectic collection has grown to over 700 artworks displayed at the Bank's Head Office, the SARB College, and its branches in Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Durban, East London, Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth and Pretoria North.   In 1991 the Bank produced the first art book of the collection’s holdings.  PLEASE NOTE THIS IS THE 2007 EDITION HARDCOVER IN BRANDNEW CONDITION, COMPLETE DUSTJACKET IN FINE UNREAD CONDITION

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 24 hours South Africa has an established, vibrant and highly politicized contemporary art scene that is often in dialogue with the deep and recent past. South African Art explores this relationship between past and present, showing contemporary and historic art objects from the earliest human artistic tendencies three million years ago to 20th-century apartheid Resistance Art and the art of post-apartheid transformation. South African Art begins with the first artistic stirrings of our earliest ancestors and the first African kingdoms through to the creation of 3D figurative art and specialised artisans. It then considers the influence of Dutch, British, Malay, Chinese and Indian settlers from the 16th century onwards and the ensuing conflicts, followed by a focus on the British colonial period and the European obsession with the exotic and the objectification of African bodies. A chapter on segregation after the Union of South Africa in 1910 and Resistance Art during the apartheid era of c.1970 to 1989 is followed by a final section looking at South Africa's transformation from an apartheid state to the 'Rainbow Nation', and the country's current artistic optimism. Features Summary South Africa has an established and highly politicized contemporary art scene that is often in dialogue with the deep and recent past. This book explores this relationship...
