This is the story of the sinking of the SS Mendi during WW1, the bravery of the men on board and the ensuing inquiry conducted by the Board of Trade in London. The story follows the small band of survivors to France where they complete their tour of duty. The First World War rages in Europe, it is a white mans war, but when the British government calls for 10 000 black soldiers to be sent to France as a labour force, men from around South Africa volunteer for service. In the foothills of the Drakensberg, Kula Hlongwane, an amaNgwane prince steps forward, followed by a group of his tribesmen. Madondo is ordered to accompany them. For him it is a nightmare from which there is no escape. When crossing the English Channel on the troopship, the SS Mendi, lights loom out of the thick black fog, then a siren blasts. With no time to avoid the collision, the Mendi is struck a devastating blow on the starboard side where Kula and his men lie sleeping. Within minutes, the Mendi begins to sink. The book makes use of various historical documents and the transcripts from the inquiry held in London by the Board of Trade to establish causality for the large loss of life. On conclusion of the inquiry, these transcripts were declared secret and concealed from view for the next 50 years. Men of the Mendi gives an in depth account of the inquiry and the apparent reason for the cover-up.  At 5 am on 21 February 1917, in thick fog about 10 nautical miles (19 km) south of St. Catherine's Point on the Isle of Wight, the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company cargo ship Darro accidentally rammed Mendi's starboard quarter, breaching her forward hold. Darro was an 11,484 GRT ship, much larger than Mendi, sailing in ballast to Argentina to load meat. Darro survived the collision but Mendi sank, killing 616 South Africans (607 of them black troops) and 30 crew. Some men were killed outright in the collision; others were trapped below decks. Many others gathered on Mendi's deck as she listed and sank. Oral history records that the men met their fate with great dignity. An interpreter, Isaac Williams Wauchope, who had previously served as a Minister in the Congregational Native Church of Fort Beaufort and Blinkwater, is reported to have calmed the panicked men by raising his arms aloft and crying out in a loud voice: "Be quiet and calm, my countrymen. What is happening now is what you came to do...you are going to die, but that is what you came to do. Brothers, we are drilling the death drill. I, a Xhosa, say you are my brothers...Swazis, Pondos, Basotho...so let us die like brothers. We are the sons of Africa. Raise your war-cries, brothers, for though they made us leave our assegais in the kraal, our voices are left with our bodies." The damaged Darro did not stay to assist. But Brisk lowered her boats, whose crews then rescued survivors. The investigation into the accident led to a formal hearing in summer 1917, held in Caxton Hall, Westminster. It opened on 24 July, sat for five days spread over the next fortnight, and concluded on 8 August. The court found Darro's Master, Henry W Stump, guilty of "having travelled at a dangerously high speed in thick fog, and of having failed to ensure that his ship emitted the necessary fog sound signals." It suspended Stump's licence for a year. Stump's decision not to help Mendi's survivors has been a source of controversy. One source states that it was because of the risk of attack by enemy submarines. Certainly Darro was vulnerable, both as a large merchant ship and having sustained damage that put her out of action for up to three months. But some historians have suggested that racial prejudice influenced Stump's decision, and others hold that he merely lost his nerve. Softcover, 320 pages. First published: February 2017

1992 1st Edition 303pp Hardcover with B&W photos Book Very Good, DJ Very Good some very minor shelfwear, contents very clean and crisp, tightly bound. Large heavy book, extra postage required: R55.00 An account of Black American soldiers in World War II who combated racism in the segregated military and on the home front. In April 1945, some Black American soldiers were among the first 'liberators' to enter Nazi death camps, encountering the survivors described by one GI as "walking skeletons." Companion volume to an upcoming PBS special, this work recounts the tragic saga of the 761st Tank Battalion, whose African American personnel trained for two years in the racist backwaters of the South, made a major contribution to Gen. George Patton's Third Army in the WW II European campaigns, then returned to the U.S. after the war to find that discrimination against them had grown worse. The 761st's military record is impressive. The battalion fought farther east than any other U.S. unit (but was prevented from making the historic link-up with the Red Army, a ceremony reserved for white troops), and led the way for U.S. forces in the liberation of Jewish survivors at Dachau and Buchenwald. In the saddest irony of all, the authors (all New York City film producers) describe how the African Americans received a warm welcome in England and from German civilians during occupation duty, and as a result were roundly resented by their white comrades in arms.   ORIGINAL  and very rare uniform  that not many individuals had the need to own or wear as part of the SAAF. Prior to the war, this uniform would been worn for full dress occasions such as parades, funerals, royal functions, and only by career officers of which there were few. Many officers did not own uniforms like this as they were expensive and simply rented them. The dark blue tunic is worn with  red striped stirrup pants and patent leather boots with spurs. White gloves were regulation.  The tunic features a row of oversized  solid brass gilt buttons that are not found on any other uniform. This style was part of the army tradition that had carried on since the time of the RFC and the first world war. The later RAF had long since disbanded this style but since the SAAF retained army ranks and traditions, this uniform was retained. The high red collar features  beautifully embroidered SAAF collar devices, surmounted on a red wool high collar and outlined in gold wire russian braid. The full dress SAAF wing is  hand embroidered in bullion thread.  The pointed gilt bordered  sleeves are similar to the uniforms worn during the first world war and became obsolete by the twenties. Once WWII arrived, these uniforms were never worn again. This uniform for sale is missing the shoulder boards, the pilot wing is loose and so is one collar badge One button on the sidecap has been replaced by a Italian WW2 button and the cap badge is missing Label is intact in pocket of tunic.Tunic is a medium size with armpit to armpit being 46 cm.The pants is a 30 inch waist. Spanish Silver 'Half-Reale' Ferdinand and Isabella 1469-1504 Ref. 40MY Noted  for being the first coin minted in the Kingdom of Spain, the  silver Spanish Reale (meaning 'Royal") dates back to the time of Christopher Columbus. Isabella, heiress to the throne of Castille, married Ferdinand, King of Naples and Sicily, and heir to the throne of Aragon, in 1469. Ferdinand and Isabella represent the beginnings of the modern Spanish coinage by issuing one design for all of unified Spain.  The coin show, on the reverse, a bunch of arrows, representing the Arms of Isabella, and, on the obverse, a Yoke, representing the Arms of Ferdinand. The 'New World' was an uncharted land, and many people still believed the world to be 'flat'. This made the funding for Columbus's voyage very difficult - which sailor would want to drop off at the edge of the world?? Eventually, it was Ferdinand and Isabella who came to his rescue and provided the funds necessary. The coin shown is a hammered silver coin, measuring approximately 20-21 mm in diameter. In fairly good condition, the inscriptions can be partially seen. Hammered coins were produced by placing a thin sheet of metal, either gold, silver or copper, between two dies, and striking the top die as to create an image on each side. Because of this method, it was difficult to produce coins of a regular diameter, and, often coins were 'cut' i.e. slivers of the coins were removed by unscrupulous traders and the metal, (silver or gold), and the thin slivers eventually re-sold. This coin was discovered in England through metal detecting. Please note - I am NOT a numismatist, but, from my research, I believe this coin is dated  and identified correctly. My apologies, if I am wrong. Price R400.00 Post R25.00   Terms: We offer a strict three-day approval period from the date the parcel reaches you.
