Malcolm doesn't like animals. Which is a problem because his family love them. Their house is full of pets. What the house is NOT full of is stuff Malcolm likes. Such as the laptop he wanted for his birthday. The only bright spot on the horizon is the Year Six school trip, which Malcolm never thought his parents would pay for. And yet there he is, on the bus, heading to... oh no. A farm. Over the next days, Malcolm changes. He learns a lot about animals. More, in many ways, than he would like. He learns what it's really like to be an animal. A whole series of animals, in fact... It does make him think differently. And speak differently. And eat differently. And, um, smell differently. But will he end up the same as before? Because sometimes the hardest thing to become is... yourself. Southern Africa is a fantastic melting pot of human beings. This is its great fascination. Living here today are people whose culture is still in the late stone age, others who live in the iron age, and yet others belonging to the age of the atom. These are people from the east, from the west, from the north, people like the Bushmen who were here so far back that they always seem part of the sundrenched landscape. In the varied scenic setting of Southern Africa, all these people in widely different ways confronted nature, come to metaphysical terms with the wonders of the land around them, devised their own explanations, myths, legends and romances about the mystery of nature, their own beginnings, the parallel community of ghosts, demons, fairies, monsters and other creatures, good and bad, of the dream world. Book and wrapper in very good condition,   >>>   About four months after the retreat from Dunkirk, Detective-Sergeant George Ormerod in London becomes very deeply involved with the rape-murder of a young girl he knew (""I was livid, plain bloody angry, that this young girl's life should be snuffed out by some animal who couldn't control himself""). The rapist-killer is now a soldier, hiding in France, and coincidentally the British Army has just decided that an expendable agent should be sent into Normandy to assist a young Frenchwoman who has orders from the British to set up a series of underground Resistance centers throughout Normandy. So when Ormerod explains his vendetta to a British general, the general decides that Ormerod is the perfect expendable man to send along with the Frenchwoman and protect her. The two, who are codenamed Dodo and Dove, are unloaded by sub onto a small French island in the channel, where they become involved in their first Resistance murder--two German soldiers. Soon they are passengers to the mainland on a German ferry, and then they set off through Normandy with a little mongrel named Formidable. Dodo and Dove fall halfway in love as they set up cells and perform acts of sabotage and slowly work their way through Normandy towards Paris.... Leslie Thomas has a gentle, amusing way with his small-minded but persistent detective hero who must finally go home to his wife, making this a familiar but charming slice of intrigue.  * Crime * Detection *  ·         *N.B.*   If you buy more than one book from me on the same day you only pay R 6 extra postage for each of the additional books - See what else I have to offer, it might just be worth your while.

The Golden Age/Dream Days/Wind in the Willows One of the all-time great animal stories and a true classic of children’s literature by Kenneth Grahame. In the "Palace without Rival" at Nineveh, the Assyrian King Sennacherib immortalised his 701 B.C. campaign against Jerusalem with a series of spectacular wall relief sculptures. Amazingly, when the palace was rediscovered twenty-five centuries later in 1847, the sculpture in the throne room areas remained largely intact. But today, air pollution, animal damage, vandalism, neglect, and - worst of all - looting for the international antiquities market by Iraq's own sanctions-striken people, have brought ruin to the palace. The splendour of Sennacherib's palace now survives only in this irreplaceable book. Art historian and archaeologist John Malcolm Russell, who in 1989 set about creating the only extensive photographic record of the palace architecture, sculptures, and inscriptions ever made, has preserved in pictures much that has since been lost. This book is not only a major contribution to the understanding of Assyrian palatial art and architecture, it is also the key to safeguarding the treasures of Sennacherib's palace and other ancient sites, for Russell proposes standards in archaeological excavation, documentation, and public policy that will help preserve cultural artifacts in an unstable world.   Hardcover: 192 pages Publisher: Yale University Press; 1st edition (December 31, 1998) Language: English Condition: As good as new - slight shelf wear
