This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days This title brings together Jack Webster's two volumes of autobiography. The first part brings to life his homeland of Buchan in the north-east of Scotland. He describes in detail his childhood years in Aberdeenshire with stories of honest hard-working folk, people with often dour exteriors and a sharp, wry sense of humour twinkling beneath. From his childhood, the story moves on to the early years of his career on the "Turiff Advertiser" and his time at the "Scottish Daily Express", with tales of his travels and meeting with the famous all over the world. The second part continues his story, opening with the "roup" in Maud, the auctioning of his family farm, and going on to tell stories and anecdotes of the famous and not-so-famous inhabitants of his native Buchan - people like his great grandfather, Gavin Greig, a scholar of international repute, and the celebrated writer, Lesi Grassic Gibbon, who tragically died at the age of 33. Whether writing of his meetings with the rich and famous, of great events, bloody murder or simply his memories of his childhood, Jack Webster displays the qualities of writing that has made him one of Scotland's best-loved journalists. He is the author of "Famous Ships of the Clyde". Features Summary Brings together Jack Webster's two volumes of autobiography. The first part tells of his homeland of Buchan in the north-east of Scotland. The second part continues his story... About the product 4to; laminated pictorial boards; pp.32, incl. index; full-colour illustrations. Trace of foxing to endpapers. Very good condition."The 1820 Settlers made a lasting contribution to the culture and history of South Africa. But who were they? Why did they emigrate to the Cape Colony? How did they cope with the trials and tribulations of frontier life? This book answers all these questions and many more as the reader is transported back to a time when groups of British settlers came to the troubled eastern Cape and were literally dumped on the land to make their way as best they could. The facts of history are all here, but Marian Robertson's lively text gives so much more, brimming with fascinating accounts of the settlers'everyday experiences and how they forged a new life in a hostile land. Every page is brought alive by Angus McBride's superb full-colour illustrations, his meticulous attention to detail showing just what it was like to be an 1820 Settler." Living with. The 1820 Settlers (Marian (text) Robertson, and Angus McBride (illustrations))

This item is sold brand new. It is ordered on demand from our supplier and is usually dispatched within 7 - 12 working days Under the banner of a Holy War, masterminded in Berlin and unleashed from Constantinople, the Germans and the Turks set out in 1914 to foment violent revolutionary uprisings against the British in India and the Russians in Central Asia. It was a new and more sinister version of the old Great Game, with world domination as its ultimate aim. Here, told in epic detail and for the first time, is the true story behind John Buchan's classic wartime thriller Greenmantle, recounted through the adventures and misadventures of the secret agents and others who took part in it. It is an ominously topical tale today in view of the continuing turmoil in this volatile region where the Great Game has never really ceased. Features Summary 'Hopkirk has made the extraordinary field of Central-Asian espionage his own... an enthralling story' Observer Author Peter Hopkirk Publisher John Murray Publishers Ltd Release date 20060327 Pages 431 ISBN 0-7195-6451-4 ISBN 13 978-0-7195-6451-2

Deeper Than Colour Thematically, Deeper than Colour explores the wide gulf between our view of ourselves, how we are seen by others, and the dispassionate images seen through the cold lens of a camera. Angus has been traumatised by his time on the Border and now begins to film himself doing ordinary things, to try to understand his life. It is impossible, he says, for an abnormal person to have a normal life in an abnormal city like Johannesburg. The effect of the Border War on young white males has received little attention from novelists. Many troubled people are roaming our deeply divided country. It is these circumstances of present and remembered trauma that became the melting pot from which Deeper than Colour emerges. About the Author James Clelland was born in Scotland but has lived most of his adult life in Johannesburg, having emigrated here in 1982 as a research biochemist. He is a Doctor of Biochemistry and has published a wide variety of scientific articles in international journals. James became a citizen of South Africa in 1992. He has been writing most of his adult life and has published about a dozen short stories in various UK literary magazines. One short story won a prize in a Scots language competition, while two were published in UK Arts Council anthologies. Writing continued in South Africa, as a writer for Woman's Forum, fiction reviewer for the Rand Daily Mail, and short story writer for Springbok Radio. Author James Clelland ISBN 9781770099258 Format Paperback Pages 186p.
