The Nox (U) team's energies went toward creating a game that's fast, fun and easy to play. It worked. Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit (U) is not without minor disappointments, chief among them being the lack of an Internet play option (although you can link players over modem and network). Additionally, some of the course shortcuts fail to deliver their promise as time-savers. It also comes with a virtual airbag--no crash is really terminal. This is a common feature of race games, but a strange convention--it contrasts starkly with the game's realistic driving features. You can strike a road sign, spin out and smash a competitor, or even hit a cliff head-on at 120 mph, and none of these accidents is fatal to the car or driver. Review You might not see the supporting merchandise so much nowadays but Pokemon is still the most successful games franchise in history. Diamond and Pearl sold 5 million copies in Japan in under three months and 1 million in America in just one month, breaking all records for the year and the series. At first sight though this looks disappointingly similar to the existing games, with only a subtle 3D effect for the game world and largely static 2D battles. However the gameplay has undergone a complete overhaul, adding numerous new features and reintroducing others from Gold/Silver/Crystal, that had previously been removed. The basics are still the same though, as you venture out into the world (called Sinnoh this time) in an attempt to catalogue each and every pokemon and battle the evil Team Galactic. Catching and training a pokemon for combat also works the same as before, although beauty and talent contests have been greatly expanded for those that prefer as little violence as possible. The game includes a day and night cycle, which severely impacts the appearance of pokemon, and you are given a new gadget called a poketch which starts as a simple watch but can be upgraded to everything from a scanner to a map. Secret bases are back and considerably more sophisticated than before but the most important new feature by far is the online mode. Review Billed as the role-playing game for people that didn't like role-playing games, the original Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was a surprise smash in 2003; now the sequel, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II, is here to carry on the good fight--almost literally, as the last game ended on a bit of cliff-hanger with our heroes being menaced by the vampire king Mordoc. Despite the Baldur's Gate name Dark Alliance II, with its real-time combat and simplified stats and rules, is more Gauntlet (or Diablo if you're too young to recognise that reference) than the Baldur's Gate PC games. This is not to imply that it's a simplistic button-basher, though; the combat is highly involved, with different styles of melee, distance and magic attacks depending on which character you choose to control. When you're not fighting (which isn't often) you can take part in those other stalwart features of the RPG genre, shopping and levelling up--both of which are made as easy and interesting as possible. If you're wondering what has changed or been improved for the sequel, the simple answer is not much. Even the graphics seem the same and the few gameplay features that have been altered are entirely minor. To be fair, though, there wasn't much wrong with the original. -- David Jenkins
