Top sales list agave

Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape)
Agave is a genus of around 200 species placed in the Agavaceae family. The plants are perennials, but each rosette flowers once and then dies. Some species are known by the common name, Century Plant. Agaves are among the most conspicuous plants of arid North America; their bold forms attract attention in any landscape whether natural or designed.     They are often confused with Yucca plants. Agaves are characterized by succulent or semi-succulent leaves that form rosettes from a few centimetres to several meters across, but there are many variations on this basic pattern.  Growing Agaves from seed is an easy, economical way to build up large numbers of plants. It is also an opportunity to find a seedling that shows unique or unusual characteristics from the mother plant. Agave geminiflora commonly known as Twin-flowered Agave is a unique agave that has narrow, dark green unarmed leaves that are very flexible. These leaves, which often number in the 100's, cascade from the center of the plant forming a dense rounded rosette to cm tall by as wide. When plants mature they will initiate flowers which are formed in pairs on an unbranched spike that rises 2.4 to 3 meters. Plant them in full sun along the coast and part sun to light shade in hot inland gardens. Drought resistant, but looks better with some summer watering.

Agave striata is a dense, suckering rosette succulent with unique spiny pencil-like foliage, with nice spherical growth that branch profusely from the base. Older clumps can be 2-3 m broad. Due to the wide area of distribution, this species shows many different forms, particularly for general habit and leaf form, and to a lesser extent in flower structure. It is very similar to Agave stricta, and can be easily confused with a yucca. Probably the hardiest of the Agave species if planted in very free draining soil.  On offer is a pack of 6 Seeds - Germination Instructions will be sent to your email.

The flowers are a source of nutrients for insects, bats, and some birds. The leaves are long, tough, and rigid, with very sharp, hard points which can easily penetrate clothing and even leather, giving the colloquial name "shin-daggers". Mexican people have used fibers from the leaves. The water stored in the flowering stalks of this plant, rich in salts and minerals, is sold in Mexico as a sport drink. It is toxic to cattle and sheep. Roots of the plants were used as soap by Native Americans. Yucca is a genus of perennial shrubs and trees in the agave family, Agavaceae. Its species are notable for their rosettes of evergreen, tough, sword-shaped leaves and large terminal panicles of white or whitish flowers. They are native to the hot and dry (arid) parts of North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Yucca whipplei ssp. eremica is a synonym for Hesperoyucca whipplei ssp. eremica, a non-trunk-forming plant that forms rosettes, either solitary or with age in small groups, with very stiff blue leaves noticeably striated that are 20 cm to 40 cm long by about 2.5cm wide with a sharp tip and leaf margins that are rough to finely toothed and the underside of the leaf rough on the surface.           When the plant is mature the bell-shaped white flowers are formed on stout vertical spikes 1.2 m to 2.4 m tall - after flowering this plant produces new rosettes from the base of the flowering plant, which differentiates this plant from some other Hesperoyucca whipplei subspecies. Other characteristics that distinguish this plant are its shorter, broader and stiffer leaves and thicker seed capsules. This plant comes from Baja California Norte, Mexico where it grows on flat terrain to steep ridges from 300 m to 750 m in elevation.

Yucca is a genus of perennial shrubs and trees in the agave family, Agavaceae. Its 40-50 species are notable for their rosettes of evergreen, tough, sword-shaped leaves and large terminal panicles of white or whitish flowers. They are native to the hot and dry (arid) parts of North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Yucca aloifolia commonly known as Spanish Bayonet has an erect trunk, 7 – 12cm in diameter, reaching up to 6m tall.           At around 6 meters it becomes top heavy and topples over. When that happens, the tip turns upward and keeps on growing. One can avoid this from happening by removing the top part of the trunk that supports the leaves. The head can then be placed onto soil where it will root and the remaining trunk will quickly form new heads along its length and around the cut edge. The trunk is armed with sharp pointed strap like leaves each about 60cm long. The young leaves near the growing tip stand erect; older ones are reflexed downward, and the oldest wither and turn brown, hanging around the lower trunk like a Hawaiian skirt. Eventually the tip of the trunk develops a 60cm long spike of white, purplish-tinged flowers, each blossom about 10cm across. After flowering, the trunk stops growing, but one or more lateral buds are soon formed, and the uppermost becomes a new terminal shoot. Any other buds become branches, but these are usually few, and the plant has an open, airy habit. Spanish bayonet also produces new buds, or offshoots, near the base of the trunk, forming a thicket.

They are native to the hot and dry (arid) parts of North America, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean. Yucca brevifolia, the Joshua Tree is a typical species of the Mojave Desert in California, Arizona, Nevada and northwards to Utah. The species name brevifolia comes from the Latin for short leafed. The tallest trees reach about 15 meters tall. Yucca brevifolia is great for a bird garden and a butterfly garden.           The trunk of a Joshua tree is made of thousands of small fibres. Older plants form a sturdy trunk that supports many crowns with typical spikey leaves. Yucca brevifolia 's foliage colour is green, evergreen. The rigid leaves are linear, bayonet-shaped, 40cm long and 2.5cm wide, tapering to a sharp point; they are borne in a dense spiral arrangement at the apex of the stems. The Joshua tree blooms in early spring. The nodding panicles are 50cm long, bearing 7.5cm greenish-white flowers with six tepals. Joshua trees usually do not branch until after they bloom and they don't bloom every year. Like most desert plants, their blooming is dependent on rainfall at the proper time. They also need a winter freeze before they will bloom. The fruit is a light brown to reddish capsule, 6 to 12cm long, 5cm in diameter; it dries and falls soon after maturity in late spring. The fruit is edible. Hardiness zones 7-10, (1°C/35°F, -15°C/5°F) in winter. The Joshua tree is very cold hardy and takes severe freezes with ease but, being a true plant of the desert, it prefers drier climates and is difficult to keep alive in cool, wet conditions. Extremely heat tolerant. They need sun, perfect drainage and little summer water.
