Captives Courageous South African Prisoners of War World War ll by Maxwell Leigh  Published by Ashanti Publishing, 1992, 1st Edition Hardcover, 219 pages, black & white photographs and schetches Dust cover in good condition, slight shelf wear on the edges. Original price sticker on the back. Hardcover in red, white lettering. Corners and bottom of spine show slight shelf wear. Tight binding, clean inside, a beautiful book. Captives Courageous; South African prisoners of war in World War II is the ninth work in the South Africans at War series published by Ashanti Press. "Leigh has divided his book into two parts. In the first part, entitled "Into the bag", he details the capture of South Africans in the Western Desert and their rapid transition from efficient fighting men to often sickly and weak prisoners of war (POW). The Western Desert was an unforgiving environment in which to find oneself a prisoner of war. If passing fighters or bombers (of either side) did not "get" you the dysentry invariably did. The heat, lack of water and lack of compassion shown by Axis non-frontline troops towards South African prisoners of war are all documented by Leigh. He also highlights the differences South Africans experienced in the treatment meted out by Italians on the one hand and Germans on the other. Ironically this relationship was to change later in the war, when many South Africans were moved north into Germany after the collapse of Italy in mid-1943. The conditions in POW camps in Germany were much tougher than those experienced in Italy."      Please judge by these images:         Please note: Payment must be made within three days of auction close.     Please have a look at all my Items here!!

Hard cover with dust cover, 186 pages. Very good condition. Under 1kg. This study profiles the lives of 60 eminent Black Africans who have reached the top of their professions and social hierarchy in South African society despite a political system designed to maintain the pre-eminence of Whites. It outlines their backgrounds, and their perceptions of a new South Africa and argues that White fears of a Black South African government destroying the economy of South Africa are unfounded. The individuals chosen for the study represent business, religion, the professions and community life, and therefore seeks to represent those who are poised to play a decisive role in the transformation of South Africa as white domination comes under threat.

Though life "on the border" was often deeply upsetting, much of it was plain boring or humdrum, even pleasant - and occasionally hilarious. For those who were there, it was an unforgettable time with after-effects ranging from bitterness to fond nostalgia, often a mix of both. Though life "on the border" was often deeply upsetting, much of it was plain boring or humdrum, even pleasant - and occasionally hilarious. For those who were there, it was an unforgettable time with after-effects ranging from bitterness to fond nostalgia, often a mix of both. With his new title, author, broadcaster and journalist David Williams captures an era that defined the life experience of white men who are now between 35 and 60. Conscripts and their families will read this book with a sense of recognition, while those who did not understand the broader picture at the time should find it here. On the Border is accessible and anecdotal, using personal accounts to enliven the narrative. It draws on the experiences of both conscripts and regulars, moving through basic training to major operations like Savannah, Cassinga and the battles around Cuito Cuanavale in 1987/98 the conclusion of "the war for Africa". Paperback, 151 pages
