Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela became the  first democratically elected  and  first Black President of South Africa, serving one term from 1994 through 1999.  His election ended white minority rule and the oppressive system of apartheid. The obverse design features a portrait of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
