  5 August 1962 signifies a pivotal moment in history. In Howick, Kwazulu-Natal, Nelson Mandela was captured marking a turning point in Mandela's journey. Later, Mandela was released in 1990 and became the first democratically elected president of South Africa in 1994. His capture site is considered the start of his long walk to freedom. This illustrious medallion celebrates the 50th anniversary of this important moment in Mandela's life.   South Africa played a major part in the creation of the Rugby World Cup. However, due to international sanctions, we were not allowed to participate in the first two events, held in 1987 and 1991. South Africa was allowed to host and participate in the Rugby World Cup in 1995, it changed the world. Nelson Mandela believed that the sport had the power to unite a nation and he chose the 1995 tournament as the global stage to showcase a new Rainbow Nation. Donning the famous number 6 Springbok jersey, Mandela handed Francois Pienaar the Webb Ellis Cup, effectively uniting a deeply divided country and establishing South Africa as a true world player. A Gold Natura Set for 1994. LION. Contains four coins: 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10z of 999.9 gold. This is the leatherette set. It was the first set of the series and was not produced with a certificate. All the coins have a common obverse. Mintage of 1,750 according to Brian Hearn. There is a small scratch at 12 o'clock on the obverse of the 1oz coin.

His own son, Makgatho Lewanika Mandela, was affected by this epidemic and passed away in 2005. Since then Mandela spent the rest of his life raising awareness of the disease and measures to minimise the chances of contracted this disease.
