Blooming from late May through October, its beautifully intricate purple and white fragrant flowers are approximately 7 – 10 cm across and are followed by smooth, round 5 cm fruits that are edible and turn yellow when ripe. The dark purple edulis variety is smaller than a lemon, though it is less acidic than the yellow passion fruit, and has a richer aroma and flavour. Although classed as half-hardy, Passion Flower can survive winters up to -20°C when it has the shelter of a north facing wall. In colder zones, these are best grown outside in containers and overwintered inside or grown as a year-round houseplant. Inside plants bloom intermittently throughout the winter months.
