MASH THE MONKEY IN SOUTH AFRICA
Meet Mash the monkey, knitted with love and banana magic by a group of African ladies in Imizamo Yethu township, Cape Town. Originally drawn by eight year old Ashton on a thank-you card (and turned into a toy by talented knitter, Astrid Behrens) the production of Mash monkeys creates income for Cynthia, Patricia, Rita, Margie and Mary. For every knitted monkey sold, 75% goes to the knitter and Astrid (for training, co-ordinating and picking up lost stitches). Thumbs up for that. The story of Mash the monkey The original Mash lives at Yuppiechef HQ and enjoys earl grey tea and chocolate buttons. Interested in how he got his name and is connected to Nelson Mandela and Victor Matfield? Read The Tale of the Pink Monkeys to learn more about our pink friend.
