After receiving a baffling transmission from Vita 1, showing blurred scenes of bedlam, concluding with the panicked base director, babbling "It's a disease--and it thinks", all communication with Mars ends. The origin of the panic on the base: Unknown. Reason for breakdown of transmission: Unknown. Fate of Vita 1 base: Unknown. A horror tale in a science-fiction setting, the game follows the hazards faced by the three investigators sent by a cynical Earth Control to assess the situation on Vita 1. The only guidance the investigators have from the base prior to the communication loss is "Once inside, stay apart. Stay alone, stay alive". When the scientists arrive at the base, they enter separately at different locations. Soon it is learned that during the search for water beneath the surface a giant sarcophagus was found that opened into a huge, ancient necropolis under the base. From the sarcophagus alien bacteria were released which infected the base's original crew. The origin of the bacteria is unknown but it will draw together the bodies of anyone infected and fuse them into hideous triplicate beings now named Trimorphs, only part human. With the fused entities from 27 of Vita 1's infected crew, and emergent creatures from the necropolis looking for them, the three separated and now infected investigators embark on a treacherous journey into the base to look for a cure for their hideously lethal condition and to discover the past of the mysterious necropolis.
