Mandela Robben Island 1/2oz Gold Nelson Mandela spent 18 years of his 27 years’ incarceration on Robben Island. The island became a symbol of Mandela's long walk to freedom for many. It was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999 and will always be recognised as a powerful symbol in South African history. This gold medallion captures the significance of the island in Mandela's journey to unite South Africa. The obverse features the famous bust of Madiba, which has been on every Mandela Medallion since 2005. Immortalising his image will ensure that he will be remembered for countless generations to come. The reverse features an icon which has become synonymous with the man himself, Robben Island, accompanied with the famous Table Mountain and the year he was incarcerated on the island, 1964 – 1982.
