IMPERIAL GERMANY, HOHENZOLLERN SILVER MERIT MEDAL WITH IN SOUTH AFRICA

Imperial Germany, Hohenzollern silver Merit Medal with gold Swords, 3rd type,1842 Diameter: 32.5mm The 'Golden' swords were added to the medal in 1866 and was awarded for the first time in 1871. The medal was awarded to the Infantry Regiment N.40 under the command of Prince Carl Anton and during WWI under the command of Prince Wilhem of Hohenzollern. This is an extremely rare medal as the popualtion of the principality at the time was only 70,000.
